A historic, tight-knit community near downtown

A quaint South Los Angeles neighborhood, Harvard Park is a dynamic, tight-knit community with a rich history. Suburbanization swept the area in the 1920s, and for decades, it was a thriving blue-collar neighborhood. After facing numerous socio-economic challenges, the resilient Harvard Park persevered and thrives through grassroots initiatives by community leaders, local organizations and city-wide partnerships to uplift its residents and restore the neighborhood’s vibrant, unique identity. Today, it's beloved for not only that strong sense of community pride but also its proximity to a bustling downtown, affordability and the walkability to restaurants and its iconic park.

Cozy homes in Harvard Park

The palm-lined neighborhood offers mostly single-family, cozy bungalows, some with unique Craftsman-style characteristics, others boasting Spanish Revival influences. Harvard Park also provides a variety of duplexes at different price points, starting at $750,000. Most were built in the 1920s, ranging from $500,000 to $975,000. Homes display bold colors, sandy neutrals and pastel hues, and each bungalow has unique character and designs – reflecting the eclectic vibe of the area. While residents are close to their neighbors, streets and sidewalks are wide and perfect for strolling around or a morning jog. Lawns are lush and well-kept, many with fenced-in backyards and gated front yards.

The heart of Harvard Park

The eponymous outdoor space is the beloved focal point of the neighborhood, hosting festivals, events and neighborhood initiatives. Shred some payment at its skatepark, let the kids play or enjoy one of its eight tennis courts, a $300,000 renovation project gifted in 2023 from The United States Tennis Association Foundation. The park’s baseball fields are an iconic, beloved piece of this community’s identity. Neighborhood kids play regular pickup games here, it’s home to youth leagues like the Azteca Baseball League and was the launching ground for major league baseball players Darryl Strawberry and Eric Davis, who both played for the Los Angeles Dodgers during their careers, and both returned to give back through baseball camps. Jackie Tatum/Harvard Recreation Center also provides opportunities for residents to play and learn. The center offers basketball courts, sand volleyball, a skate plaza, an outdoor pool with a waterslide, self-defense classes, a teen club and other enrichment classes for kids and adults.

Community pride shines

Community initiatives are the backbone of Harvard Park. The anniversary party is the biggest, held in the park with a ceremonial walk around Jackie Tatum Harvard Park, a basketball clinic, a skate party and other festivities. The American Heart Association hosts an annual “Steps” event in the park, and in the summer, the town hosts “Movies in the Park.” Its City Council provides an annual neighborhood job fair to bring diverse employment opportunities to residents. The Los Angeles Police Department, the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and other civic associations have also formed the Community Safety Partnership program to collaborate on supporting and uplifting Harvard Park.
