A rural farming community 40 miles from Bakersfield
Surrounded by thousands of acres of farmland in the southern San Joaquin Valley, Lost Hills is a small country community that embraces small-town living. With a population of less than 2,000, Lost Hills is located approximately 40 miles northwest of Bakersfield, with a small selection of local businesses and amenities. “It’s a big farming community,” says Tara Hughes, a Bakersfield-area Realtor with Agentcor Realty. “Most of the buyers I’ve worked with in the area have bought land and built their own homes. It’s an open, rural community.” The Paso Robles Highway passes through the center of town, allowing direct access to larger communities like Wasco. “Lost Hills has its own school system, but people have to drive closer to Bakersfield for a bigger shopping selection,” Hughes says.
Mediterranean architecture and manufactured homes in Lost Hills
Ranch-style homes and manufactured houses make up most of the market in the area. Fixer uppers and manufactured builds range from $50,000 to $230,000, while newer homes go for $250,000 to $320,000. Most of the houses in the community were built between the 1970s and early 2000s, with a selection of ranch-style homes on the east side of town that were built in 2021 and 2022. Many houses feature Mediterranean-style detailing, and fenced-in yards are often dotted with palm trees.

Dual credit opportunities at Wasco High
Lost Hills Elementary School and A.M. Thomas Middle School share a campus on the community's west side, and both earn C-plus overall grades from Niche. The B-rated Wasco High School, home of the Tigers, offers a career and technical education dual enrollment program where students can earn college credit and industry certifications by taking classes like medical terminology, introduction to criminal justice and computer integrated manufacturing. The high school also offers over 20 clubs and extracurriculars, ranging from outdoor adventure to theater.

Local businesses along the Paso Robles Highway
While Lost Hills is largely agricultural and residential, the area has a small handful of restaurants. Gabby’s serves classic Mexican cuisine and cocktails with an outdoor patio. Around 2 miles east along Paso Robles Highway, there is a selection of fast-food eateries, as well as local food trucks such as El Dollar Taqueria and Maharaja Indian Food. Locals can pick up their groceries at El Toro Loco Supermarket. For a larger selection, there is a Walmart around 17 miles east in Wasco.
Gabby's is a popular Mexican restaurant for travelers and local residents of Lost Hills.
Lost Hills residents can take the short drive to get household goods at the Wasco Walmart.

Lost Hills Park and nearby hiking trails
Lost Hills Park has a playground, soccer fields, a basketball court and picnic shelters. The park serves as the community’s central gathering place and hosts town events from Easter egg hunts to track meets. The 11,000-acre Kern National Wildlife Refuge is a short drive northeast of Lost Hills and has over 10 miles of gravel roads and hiking paths. The refuge is a popular spot for wildlife watching for animals such as coyotes, hawks and egrets. In the winter months, the area is open for waterfowl hunting twice a week. Lost Hills is also within 100 miles of both Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Parks, which have hundreds of miles of mountainous trails.
Sequoia National Park's redwood trees are within driving distance of Orosi.

A car-reliant community
Lost Hills is largely car-reliant, with no public transit stops in the community. California state Route 46 can take drivers around 60 miles west to Paso Robles, while Interstate 5 spans roughly 45 miles southeast to Bakersfield and about 200 miles northwest to San Jose.
