Community shines through in Newburg
In the last twenty-some years, major investments have been made in the amenities for Newburg community members of all ages. The Newburg Community Center offers programs for all ages – “We do a lot of senior programming,” says Trevor Neaveill, Recreation Leader at Newburg Community Center. “We have things like tai chi and zumba… we have an outdoor education program and we have some arts programs as well to help kids with theatre experiences and how to get into the arts.” Across the parking lot, Newburg Library features 30 touchscreen computers, rocking chairs for reading and an eco-friendly design. It’s not just about lending out books – the library mentions that it provides a teen lounge for community gaming, after-school programs where teens have learned to customize skateboard decks and ride them, and other events. There are adult and children's programs, but they mention that the location right by the middle school lends itself to programming for neighborhood teens.A community comes together to celebrate and give back
Councilwoman Dr. Barbara Shanklin has been at the forefront of driving events to bring the community together. She recalls being part of Newburg Days Festival in Petersburg Park even before she was leading the organization of it. “It’s been over sixty years now, it was small at first but it’s grown over the years. We now have a big parade… we have all kinds of bands, anyone in the neighborhood that wants to participate in the parade can be part of it.” This three-day event includes gospel music, a Sunday service in the park, youth-focused activities, a community breakfast, a senior citizen luncheon, vendors, live music and more. Light Up Newburg is a major year-end event in early December, where Petersburg Park is lit up, and the community helps to give back to kids who might not otherwise receive something at Christmas. “We give all the kids a raffle ticket, we have food – hot dogs, hot chocolate – so no child comes that won’t get something to eat,” says Shanklin. “Then we raffle off the toys, kids come up and pick what they want, we have bicycles, games, race cars all with the help of different agencies the community. We usually help out 300 or more kids… I started off with two bikes in 2003. Now we give away bikes and scooters and more… it’s just a pleasure to see the kids faces when they get those toys.”Traditional single-floor living
Two- and three-bedroom ranch-style homes from the mid-1900s make up the majority of homes in Newburg. Set amongst old-growth sycamores and maples, with a network of sidewalks crisscrossing the neighborhood, these homes generally feature off-street parking with a garage or carport. Small backyards, often delineated by fences for privacy, provide room for playsets and above-ground pools. An equal mix of renters and owners, these properties consistently fetch between $120,000 and $270,000, although some investment opportunities can be found in the range of $60,000 to $100,000. Pricing, combined with a desirable and developing neighborhood, means that homes here often sell in less than three weeks, compared to the six-week average nationally. Residents may have to be aware of flooding concerns depending on where in the neighborhood they are looking – the southwestern edge along Preston Highway has an elevated risk.Jefferson County Public Schools provide plenty of choices
Students living in Newburg attend Jefferson County Public Schools, which has a school choice system that offers the opportunity for students to attend classes close by or be bussed to distant schools. For those that stay close by, there are three pipelines. They may attend Rangeland Elementary, ranked a C-minus school by Niche, then progress to Thomas Jefferson Middle which garners a C-minus and then wrap up at C-graded Southern High, which is part of the Academies of Louisville program. The Academies at Southern include iGen, which trains students in marketing and finance; the METAL program, which focuses on manufacturing, engineering, technology and leadership; and the Automotive Engineering Academy. Other students may start out at Indian Trail Elementary with a C-minus grade, then head to Thomas Jefferson Middle School before finishing up at Seneca High School, which earns a C-plus. Still others may start at Price Elementary with its C-minus rating before attending Newburg Middle School that is rated a C. These students are likely to wrap up their school journey at Fern Creek High School, which receives a B-minus.A developing park meeting the desires of the community
Sitting at the northeast end of Newburg, Petersburg Park is a constantly growing park with 28 acres of recreational space that includes an amphitheater, playground, basketball courts, walking trail and plenty of green space for team sports. Shanklin mentions that she helped guide through a recently built skate park – neighborhood skateboarders had been requesting one for years, and now the pipes and rails in the park are regularly filled with veterans and novices alike. Black Mudd Park provides a ballfield, basketball and tennis courts in a smaller, more secluded location.Popular spots on Poplar Level
Running through the middle of the neighborhood, Poplar Level Road is home to local restaurants and businesses. Sam’s Seafood & Grill is known for its fish and seafood dinners, which includes everything from catfish to snapper and perch. They also offer a variety of southern specialties, from frog leg dinners to wings and gizzards combos. Just down the road, La Chiquita Bakery & Store is a traditional Cuban bakery serving everything from Cuban pizzas to the classic Cuban sandwich and bread to take home. Locals swing through for a cortadito coffee and a quick scrambled egg sandwich on house-baked loaf bread. Sam’s Club and Target provide everyday needs including housewares and groceries, while Jefferson Mall is a short drive and is home to popular retailers like American Eagle and Dillard’s, along with national chain restaurants including LongHorn Steakhouse and the Olive Garden.Getting around Newburg and greater Louisville
The Transit Authority of River City – fondly referred to as TARC by locals – provides service throughout the neighborhood and into the heart of Louisville. Winding residential streets lined with clear, well-maintained sidewalks make it somewhat bikeable and walkable, but most residents will still need a car for activities. The University of Louisville – Peace Hospital and Norton Audubon Hospital are within 5 miles of the neighborhood's heart, usually a 15-minute drive or shorter. Flights across the country or internationally are similarly close, with Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport also within 5 miles and accessible via TARC.
