History and restoration in the community
Vibrant murals and sidewalks connecting established shotgun homes fill Shelby Park, a suburb 2 miles south of downtown Louisville, maintaining the area’s cultural and historic community. "There's been a lot of movement into Shelby Park because of the park itself, a perfect square park in the middle of the neighborhood. This has caused a major residential push in the last five years," says Barrett Goff, a Broker at Allodium Real Estate with 11 years of experience with both residential and commercial properties in Louisville. "Homes are on one side and businesses are on the other, keeping the area neighborhood-driven—which residents love."

Renovated shotgun homes
Stacked close together along the walkable residential streets are shotgun homes, Foursquares and other colonial-inspired architecture. Some houses are more recently renovated, with quarter-acre backyards opening to shady alleyways for parking. Single-family homes typically range between 1,000 to 2,000 square feet and are priced between $150,000 to $350,000. There are also 2,000- to 6,000-square-foot apartment buildings and duplexes for $375,000 to $875,000. “Prices are increasing because of investor interest. With the University of Louisville just a mile away, there’s a high draw for Airbnbs and student rentals,” adds Steve Minor, a Realtor at RE/MAX Properties East since 2001 with experience in the Louisville region.

Perso serves Italian-inspired dishes, and across the street, locals enjoy cocktails in a quirky and rustic setting. Nearby, residents sip craft beer on the outdoor patio of Atrium Brewing, a popular spot with rotating food trucks. A few blocks south, Toasty's Tavern provides an intimate, industrial atmosphere with sandwiches and brews. Several small grocery markets are peppered around the neighborhood, like Sunshine Grocery to the west and Neighborhood Food Mart to the north.

Cultural attractions in downtown Louisville
A pull to the area is the closeness to downtown Louisville, a city teeming with eateries, art and museums. “Louisville is referred to as a big small town, partly because of the cultural activities we have that aren’t common in cities this size. We have the Louisville Orchestra, Ballet, and the nationally-known Actors Theatres, where a lot of playwrights get their start,” Minor says. Whiskey Row and Museum Row provide a diverse array of distilleries and historical attractions.

I've lived here a little over five years. I love it, location wise it's closer to everything I love...the highlands, St James, Nulu, Downtown. And it's changing everyday. It's exciting to see what's growing in this area.
