Lucerne Valley is a desert outpost outside San Bernardino
The Lucerne Valley is a small High Desert community between the Mojave Desert and San Bernardino County. It is 15 miles from the closest town and is surrounded by sand and rocky hills. Limited new housing and very few commercial businesses have preserved the community's rural character. General stores and small cafes line the main road, and residential ranches are spread throughout the valley. Two major highways connect the rural outpost to the rest of the region, including larger towns like Victorville and tourist spots like Big Bear Lake.
Ranch homes are the most common style in Lucerne Valley.
A typical family home in Lucerene Valley costs $200,000 to $550,000, while a property that needs renovations can cost $50,000 to $150,000.

Renovated High Desert properties have stables, barns and extra land
Most of the properties in Lucerne Valley are ranch or adobe-style family homes built before 1990 and recently renovated. Newer homes on private land also occasionally come on the market. Homes can have between two and 20 acres, and extra land can accommodate barns, stables and detached guesthouses. Homes are spread out, with very few organized subdivisions. A typical family home costs $200,000 to $550,000, while a property that needs renovations can cost $50,000 to $150,000. “One of my customers moved here from Bolivia and said they chose here because they wanted to live in California, and this was one of the cheapest places in the state to buy and build,” says Bill Lembright, a manager at Lucerne Valley Market and Hardware who has lived in Lucerne Valley for 50 years. The community’s CAP Index Crime Score is 2 out of 10, half the national average score of 4.

Pioneer Park, Big Bear Lake and dry lakes are the big attractions
The main community park is Pioneer Park between the Lucerne Valley Public Library and the Lucerne Valley Community Church on Old Woman Springs Road. Pioneer Park has tennis and basketball courts and a small BMX track. The surrounding desert has natural landmarks, including Lucerne Dry Lake and Rabbit Springs Dry Lake. These areas are popular for off-roading and have served as backdrops for films like “Stagecoach” and “The Hills Have Eyes.” Big Bear Lake, 26 miles to the south, is open for visitors every season and is known for its skiing, camping and fishing. “This is a big motorcycle racing area, rock climbing [and] rocket launching around the dry lakes,” Lembright says. “It’s not boring unless you want it to be.”
Big Bear Snow Play is a family friendly resort wit snowy slopes for tubing in Big Bear City.

King of the Hammers in Johnson Valley
The Johnson Valley OHV Area is about 10 miles from the center of Lucerne Valley. The off-roading area on Camp Rock Road challenges drivers with courses through mountains and dry lakes. The rocky hills in the southern part of Johnson Valley are known as “Hammers.” This demanding course is the centerpiece of the annual “King of the Hammers” event at the beginning of the year, when hundreds of teams compete for the crown.
The dry heat of the Mojave Desert and the cold flashes in the San Bernadino Mountains both impact Lucerne Valley.

Lucerne Valley Market and Café 247 are locally owned
Aside from the Dollar General on Old Woman Springs Road, most stores and restaurants remain locally owned. “We have two gas stations, two feed stores, three or four restaurants, and we’re one of the only supermarkets here,” Lembright says. “People have to drive into Victor Valley for their doctors and cheap gas.” Lucerne Valley Market and Hardware on Highway 18 is the community’s “modern general store.” It sells everything from fresh produce to camping supplies and has a café, bank, laundromat and doctor’s office surrounding the main building. Most of the area’s restaurants, including Joe's Café, El Coyote Mexican Food and Cafe 247, are on Old Woman Springs Road. Café 247 also hosts live music, community food drives and art workshops every month. The closest chain grocery stores, shopping malls and hospitals are in Victorville and Apple Valley, about 15 miles away.
