Parkwood
Cottages, ranch-style homes and Modern Traditional builds populate Parkwood
Housing stock in Parkwood reflects the post-war sensibilities of Madera’s working class at the time of construction. “Most homes there were built in the 1950s and 1960s, although construction continued into the early 2000s,” Salazar says. “The style isn’t midcentury modern. What you’ll find mostly are entry-level houses that are generally affordable and have good-sized yards.” Single-story Craftsman cottages are common, as are sprawling stucco-sided ranch-style homes. Two-story Modern Traditional builds can also be found. Homes on the outskirts of the neighborhood often look out onto large swaths of farmland, while those closer to the checkerboard suburban streets tend to have fenced-in yards large enough to accommodate in-ground swimming pools. Prices range from $240,000 to almost $580,000, depending on lot size, number of bedrooms and build year.Duane E. Furman High offers independent study to all students
Parkwood children are zoned to attend Parkwood Elementary School, rated C by Niche and located at the east end of the neighborhood. They then proceed to Martin Luther King Jr. Middle, which also earns a C. The closest public high school, Madera South High, scores a C-plus. Alternatives include Duane E. Furman High, which receives a B-plus and offers an independent study program to students from kindergarten through grade 12.Connected to Madera and Fresno by Route 99
California state Route 99 frames the eastern boundary of the neighborhood and serves as the area’s major artery, connecting the community north to the center of Madera and south to Fresno. “Fresno is not far at all,” Salazar says. “In bad traffic it’s only about half an hour, but most of the time you can make it from the hospital exit into the city in about 15 minutes.”Local taquerias and grocery stores throughout Madera
Discount groceries are available within the neighborhood at the DG Market on Madera Avenue, and the closest supermarket is the Save Mart on Howard Road. Residents can also pick up daily household necessities here or head to the nearest Walmart on the north end of the city. Local restaurant Tacos Guanajuato on Pecan Avenue offers traditional Central Mexican cuisine. Many other taquerias populate the downtown area, and neighbors can also make the trip to nearby Fresno for more extensive options.Community parks provide playgrounds for neighborhood children
Parkwood Park on the south side of the neighborhood offers a small playground for children and a baseball diamond for rec league and pickup games. Almond Park also offers a playground and a small, shaded picnic shelter. Golfers can head north of the city to the Madera Municipal Golf Course or can head to the driving range at Bluff Pointe in Fresno.
