Dunn's Marsh
Suburban Neighborhood in Madison, Wisconsin
Dane County 53711, 53719
Malborough Park is centrally located
Since Marlborough Park anchors the community geographically and recreationally, kids often venture there after school to climb on the playground or compete in a game of horseshoes. Gardeners will love getting their hands dirty in the community garden on the weekend or finding a taste of nature along the forested trails. Serious hiking enthusiasts head across Seminole Highway to the trails at the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Arboretum, which spans over 1,200 acres. The hilly terrain that winds through woodlands to marshlands and prairies makes it great for watching wildlife, offering glimpses of turkeys or sandhill cranes. On the other side of Dunn’s Marsh, Allied Park and the adjacent Belmar Hills Park have picnic tables and shelters that make them popular for neighborhood cookouts. To give back, folks can donate to the food pantry or volunteer in the same building as the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County. The neighborhood association frequently hosts events like community meals or seasonal celebrations such as pumpkin carving. Other group activities include a day at the AMC Fitchburg 18 movie theater or the 18-hole Nakoma Golf Club.Biting into a burger at Badger Tavern
Refueling after the park is easy at Badger Tavern Bar and Grill, an old standby serving burgers and cheese curds. The atmosphere is friendly and full of regulars who know the servers and cooks by name. For lunch on the go, stop by Gino’s Italian Deli for a counter-service sandwich and grab a take-and-bake lasagna for dinner later. Other local and chain restaurants can also be found along US Highway 18, with plenty of bars to catch the Badgers game on TV. “There’s also a shopping center along the highway with a Home Depot, a Latin supermarket and some antique stores,” says Johnson. Head three miles south to pick up groceries at Target or Aldi.A mix of rentals, older homes and newer, affordable construction
Most of Dunn’s Marsh’s housing is contained inside five streets, forming a residential pentagon. “There's a unique mix of long-term rentals, newer construction houses, and older single-family homes. There’s something for everyone,” says Johnson. About half of the neighborhood’s housing is apartment complexes clustered at its southwest corner. These buildings vary in unit count and height, with everything from duplexes to established low-rise communities. Winding cul de sacs encircle Malborough Park, the neighborhood’s largest. Mature trees line the sidewalks, accompanied by cars parked comfortably along the wide streets. Ranch-style and split-level homes rest on neat lawns with wooded backyards. Due to its proximity to Downtown Madison, prices for both owners and renters have increased in recent years. To bring in new home buyers, the city undertook a housing project. “It was a housing development built in conjunction with the city of Madison,” says Realtor Tony Antoniewicz of Re/Max Preferred. “It was a way to put people in brand new homes at a very reasonable price if they qualify because of income. You could also pay cash since it wasn’t income-restricted.” Buyers can get a three-bedroom, vinyl-sided ranch-style home for between $250,000 and $420,000. Split-levels are less common and priced a bit higher, ranging from $365,000 to $400,000.Attending class in Dunn's Marsh schools
Students start out at Stoner Prairie Elementary, an A-minus-rated school according to Niche. Savanna Oaks Middle scores an A-plus, and Verona Area High earns an A from Niche. The high school offers more than 25 athletic programs and 50 student-run clubs and activities, so there are plenty of ways for students to get involved.Getting around Dunn's Marsh
Three Madison Metro bus stops serve residents in this neighborhood, all on the west side. Although the five-mile stretch takes 35 minutes to reach Madison, rush hour traffic has little to no impact on the duration of the commute.
