Natural resources and convenient location among neighborhood highlights
The Faircrest neighborhood sits on Madison’s west side, tucked between Owen Conservation Park and Mineral Point Road, and abuts the Parkwood Hills neighborhood. “To me, the highlights are the natural resources in the neighborhood as well as the walkability of schools, Owen Conservancy, restaurants, proximity to the bike path and bus routes as well as the new Bus Rapid Transit route,” says Max Magee, the vice president of the Faircrest Neighborhood Association. Trees provide shade and atmosphere along the hilly and curved streets, which are thematically named. “My favorite trivia about the neighborhood is that the streets are named alphabetically, for nautical items — Anchor, Beach, Cable, through Masthead, Nautilus, and Offshore Drives,” Magee says.
Varied architecture along hilly, leafy streets
Faircrest houses are varied and distinct. Midcentury modern designs sit next to ranch homes and split-levels, with Colonial Revival designs also common. “Homes were mostly built in the 60s and 70s,” says Kietra Olson, a Realtor with Realty Executives Cooper Spransy. “There’s large lots and mature trees and lots of parks and green spaces.” Prices for single-family homes can range from $450,000 through $750,000. Condos are also available along Mineral Point Road, and these cost between $160,000 and $230,000. The hilly landscape offers both beauty and new challenges. “Because of the hills, we have had to deal with managing the water flows and the City of Madison has been working on a watershed project to help mitigate the higher levels of rainfall and flooding that we're starting to see as the climate becomes more volatile,” Magee says.
Faircrest has a range of housing styles to display on its tree lined streets.

Wild turkeys and other wildlife flock around Owen Conservation Park
Faircrest offers residents access to nature and wildlife. “The thing that I was really surprised to find when we moved in was how intimately close to nature we are,” Magee says. “On a daily basis there are flocks of turkeys parading down the street, jumping over fences in the backyard, and deer, coyotes, and hawks constantly in and out of the neighborhood as well.” Owen Conservation Park is home to almost 100 acres of oak savannah. Garner Park is known for its award-winning shelter, whose design was influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, plus a scenic overlook, skating rink and pickleball courts. The Parkcrest Swim & Tennis Club, named in combination of the Parkwood Hills and Faircrest neighborhoods, is on Inner Drive. Membership is required for the club.

Oakcrest Tavern is a longtime institution
West Towne Mall is under 2 miles west of Faircrest, and Market Square Shopping Center is just across Mineral Point Road. While Madison’s west side is home to many chain restaurants, some local options do exist near the neighborhood. Oakcrest Tavern at the base of Rosa Road is a longtime institution for no-frills pub grub. Otto’s Restaurant and Bar serves Mediterranean fare in an 1870s farmhouse. Saigon Noodles on Odana Road specializes in Vietnamese cuisine. Hy-Vee on Whitney Way is the closest option for groceries at just over a mile away.

New rapid bus line speeds downtown via Mineral Point Road
Downtown Madison is 5 miles away and accessible via Mineral Point Road. There’s also a new express bus route; Madison Metro’s Bus Rapid Transit, or BRT, runs along Mineral Point Road with a stop at Island Drive and another at Rosa Road. For cyclists, the Southwest Commuter Path is a little southeast of Faircrest on the other side of Odana Road. UW Health’s University Hospital is under 4 miles away and the Dane County Regional Airport is 10 miles away.
Annual Madison Opera at Garner Park hits the high notes
The neighborhood association hosts a series of events. “We have our annual Faircrest Halloween Fest and various local neighborhood socials but our proximity to Parkwood Hills means that we frequently attend each other’s events,” Magee says. “Parkwood Hills has an Easter Egg Hunt that my daughter has participated in since she could walk.” Garner Park also hosts an annual Opera in the Park event, in which Madison Opera puts on a free outdoor show in the summer.
