Walkable schools and parks on the cusp of Madison
Located 6 miles southwest of Downtown Madison, the neighborhood of Meadowood features winding suburban streets lined with tall pines and maples, where community gardens and expansive parks are a short walk down the sidewalk. “Originally, Meadowood was marketed as country living in the city. That hasn’t been true for a while now, but it’s still a quiet, residential suburb,” says Mike Edmonds, an area resident for roughly 20 years and Board President of the Meadowood Neighborhood Association. “Meadowood is predominantly single-family, midcentury homes. There are three schools around the neighborhood, and we’re surrounded by churches, a drugstore and a library.” With frequent neighborhood events and an established residential feel, the ranch-style homes of Meadowood provide a comfortable place to put down roots.

Ranch-style homes built between the 1960s and ‘70s
Single-story ranch-style houses built between the 1960s and ‘70s populate Meadowood’s gently curving streets. Some have midcentury modern flairs, and nearly all feature attached two-car garages and ample lawn space shaded by mature trees. A few split-level and two-story homes also line the sidewalks in addition to the brick apartment complexes on Balsam Road. Prices start in the upper $200,000 range and can climb to $530,000, although the median home sells for $375,000.

A longstanding tradition of community involvement and neighborhood events
The Meadowood Neighborhood Association prides itself on its long history and deep involvement in the community, which began with the association’s founding in 1958. According to Mark Bauman, who has lived in Meadowood for over 30 years, “There are still a few original homeowners in the neighborhood who remember that when they moved here, the roads were all dirt, and most of the area was farmland.” Though the farms are gone, some residents still grow their own produce at a pair of community gardens found in Lucy Lincoln Hiestand Park and Meadowood Park, where local households can reserve annual plot space. Other ways residents stay involved include the neighborhood’s annual July picnic and the Meadowood Health Partnership, an initiative that provides support services to families.
Close to Fitchburg shopping and dining or West Towne Mall
Meadowood residents can pick up their groceries and other daily essentials at the nearby Hy-Vee, Aldi or Target located two miles south in Fitchburg. A handful of local dining options are nearby, such as Quivey’s Grove, where American fare is served in a historic mansion decorated with antiques. For a casual breakfast, folks head to Pancake Café for a diner atmosphere and buttermilk pancakes slathered in syrup. There’s also the Flying Hound Alehouse, which features a lengthy list of rotating drafts. “There’s a lot of farm-to-table restaurants in Madison because it’s a compact little city surrounded by farmland. Every Saturday Downtown they have the largest farmers’ markets in the country,” Edmond says, referring to the Dane County Farmer’s Market. “It’s in Capitol Square so it’s about eight blocks, and something like 20,000 people come out to it every week. And if the Badgers are playing, it’s even busier.” Chain eateries and fast-food bites are 3.5 miles north near West Towne Mall, where residents shop for home and clothing needs at retailers.

Drive or bike into Downtown Madison
Located approximately 6 miles from Downtown Madison, residents can commute into the heart of the city in about a 15- to 20-minute drive. “We’re about a mile from the bike path that people use to commute into Downtown,” Edmond says. “They even plow it during the winter — not that I’d want to be on a bike when it’s 20 degrees out.” Metro Transit bus stops along Raymond Road travel to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and its health system, with service going as far as Capitol Square. For further trips, Dane County Regional Airport is approximately 20 miles northeast or roughly a half-hour away by car.
