The quiet bedroom community of Madrid

Generations of families live in humble single-family homes in Madrid, Iowa, a quiet bedroom community about 30 miles north of Des Moines. While the roots run deep here, the forest is small. There are only about 3,000 residents, but most prefer it that way. "It's so small that everybody knows pretty much everybody, and it'll be small for a while," says Realtor Shane Torres with RE/MAX Concepts. Though small, Madrid has ample recreation amenities, including several city parks, a paved trail cutting through town and a large public garden with educational programs. A few restaurants, a small grocery store and a Dollar General mean residents don't have to leave the community to access basic needs.

Bungalows, ranch-style and New Traditional homes

Torres says affordable housing brings buyers to Madrid. The town has seen new development, but not much. Bungalows, ranch-style and New Traditional homes are standard, typically ranging in price from $150,000 to $450,000. Homes sit evenly spaced out on moderately sized yards, and sidewalks are inconsistent on residential streets.
