A lakefront community with a stellar school system
The city of Mahtomedi is known for its small-town charm and enviable location on White Bear Lake. And with its location 15 miles northeast of Saint Paul and 8 miles west of Stillwater, this small city is right in the middle of everything one might need. Surprisingly, its great lakeside location is just one of the top reasons people are attracted to the area. “It is within the Mahtomedi Public School District, which is one of the most sought-after in the state,” says Melissa Wiegele, a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker Realty who has sold homes in the area. “It’s definitely one of those areas people want to be in.” Also notable: Mahtomedi has a CAP Index crime risk score of 1 out of 10, compared to the national average of 4.

Rich recreation options
Outdoor lovers will feel right at home in the city of Mahtomedi, with its rich park and trail system that provide recreational opportunities to residents of all ages. Mahtomedi Beach is a summer staple with its sandy beach on scenic White Bear Lake. Residents can swim in the crystal-clear water when the weather is warm, and on nice days the small parking lots fill up fast. Neighbors love the relative quiet, calm and cleanliness compared to other beaches. The lake is great for all kinds of boating activities, from sailing to jet skiing, and the White Bear Yacht Club is a big deal in the area, says Wiegele. For folks looking for things to do on dry land, the Dellwood Country Club is popular with Mahtomedi residents, and there are several apple orchards surrounding the area for when the weather starts getting crisp. For hiking, Katherine Abbott Park rests on 76 acres and the varied physical features and terrain make it a unique, natural experience despite its urban location. More traditional parks are also scattered throughout the community, like Wildwood Park, with its playground, open green spaces, and ball fields.

A top school district that routinely draws buyers
Schools are a draw for homebuyers with small children in Mahtomedi, who attend schools in the Mahtomedi Public School District. “They’ve been known to have a smaller class size and a quality public education there,” says Jay Mangine, a Realtor with Realty Group. Kids start their journey at Wildwood Elementary, which serves kindergarten through second graders and is rated B-minus by Niche, before moving on to O.H. Anderson Elementary, which serves third through fifth graders. The school is graded A-minus and named the second-best public elementary school in the county, according to Niche. Students then go on to Mahtomedi Middle and Mahtomedi High School, both also rated A-minus.

What to expect when house-hunting in Mahtomedi
The real estate market in Mahtomedi is very competitive, with an average price of $561,000, according to Wiegele. While it’s not unheard of to find small early-1900s homes for prices starting around $200,000, new construction is becoming the norm, with more opportunities for luxury homes than there are homes for first-time homebuyers. “It’s a bit of a higher-end community,” Wiegele says. Living lakefront on White Bear Lake is aspirational, with most properties selling before they even hit the market; prices for waterfront property represent the high end of the market, up to around $1.4 million.

Mahtomedi’s shopping and dining options
Mahtomedi’s shopping and dining scene is limited, but you can find a restaurant any time of the day. The Wild Bean is your quintessential neighborhood coffee house, with its homey décor inside and out and huge bay window. If you’re picky with your chai tea, you’re in luck because guests rave about it here. The Wildwood Tavern opens for lunch and promises scratch-made food prepared daily. The red brick building teases a rustic interior, with beamed ceilings and wooden tables. Residents can enjoy the shrimp and grits, a customer favorite, on the inviting patio decorated with string lights and green umbrellas. For an upscale dinner, Gordy’s Steakhouse is a restaurant and bar serving steak, seafood and pasta in an elegant space with dark wood-clad walls and low lighting, perfect for a date night. More restaurants can be found around the lake, and for more variety, Wiegele says many people go to nearby Stillwater, which is known for its food scene. For groceries and other necessities, the area has an ALDI and Festival Foods. There’s also the Mahtomedi Area Farmers’ Market, which brings produce growers, artists, bakers, crafters and community organizations together every Saturday throughout the summer at Veteran’s Memorial Park. Local vendors offer fresh produce, flowers and plants, honey, artisan breads, and handmade crafts and artwork.
