The quintessential small town, Manheim Borough rises out of the Lancaster County countryside, a historic town undertaking a new life. It’s embodied by the recent revitalization projects around town, especially in the market square, an open space in the center of town built during its founding in 1762. The revitalization grant will add parking, wider sidewalks and beautification to the historic square. “It was stagnant for so long,” says Chad Thompson, the owner of Chuck Thompson Realty, “so it’s neat to see.” Encompassing the borough as well as the surrounding area, the Manheim neighborhood blends agriculture and industry, living and working, into a community that Andy Taylor would feel at home in.

Dining and retail built around character

While close to the city of Lancaster, Manheim has a distinctly different vibe to its shopping and dining. Small retail shops dot Manheim Borough, with REO Manheim Marketplace being home to retail like Prussian Street Arcade, which brings together artisans and vendors from all throughout the region into one convenient store; Mill 72 Bake Shop and Café; and Artifice Ales and Mead, who craft their own meads and brews while striving to incorporate local ingredients. The Cat’s Meow aims for a Gatsbyesque vibe with its drinks, menu and décor, and is known for raucous weekend evenings. Another place with throwback vibes is Manheim Twin Kiss, which opened in 1952 and has kept the 50s counter-serve burger joint feel alive ever since – in the summers, their picnic tables get crowded with families digging into banana splits and Arctic Kisses. When residents need to do their weekly shopping, Weis Markets shares the Manheim Shopping Center with a True Value hardware store and other assorted retail.

An extensive variety of home options

The sheer expanse of Manheim means that a wide variety of homes are available, from starter manufactured homes squeezed together in parks, to neo-Traditional and European-inspired sprawling estates on an acre or two, to traditional farmhouses sitting on acres of worked land. In the borough itself, unique Italianate and Second Empire influenced homes mix amongst pre-Civil and, in some cases, pre-Revolutionary War homes along with brick rowhomes sporting Federal influences. Manufactured homes generally sell in the range of $50,000 to $70,000, while duplexes and single-family homes on small lots in the borough generally fetch from $125,000 to $275,000. Updated single-family homes, modern models, and larger lots get from $300,000 to $700,000, while unique estates and those with tillable acreage can break through $1 million.

Green space, both tamed and wild

In the borough, Manheim Veterans Memorial Park is the community hub, featuring baseball diamonds, basketball courts, soccer fields and tennis and pickleball courts. A large rock-climbing wall and swings on the wood-chip playground offer play for all ages, while the park extends to a walking trail along Chiques Creek, which runs along the east side of the park. Crossing the creek is done via Shearer’s Covered Bridge – one of Lancaster’s 28 covered bridges and one of three in Manheim – which was built in 1847. An active hunting and fishing community, Manheim residents can be seen taking to the state game lands at the northern edge of the community for hiking and angling in the summer, and hunting in fall and winter.

Baron pride

Manheim Central School District serves the students of the community. Two elementary schools, Doe Run and Baron, contain kindergarten through fourth grade, and both earn a grade of B from Niche. Manheim Central Middle School is home to grades five through eight and earns a B-minus; Manheim Central High School wraps up grade schooling and receives a B grade. With an 18-time championship-winning Barons football team, Central might remind some people of Dillon High School from Friday Night Lights – “You go to a football game on a Friday night and good luck getting a seat,” says Thompson, a graduate of Central himself.

Events reflecting the agricultural heritage

Perhaps the only event that overshadows the games in the fall is the Manheim Community Farm Show at Memorial Park, a five-day event that has been part of this agriculturally based community since 1954. Food venders, sponsors, and the future farmers of the community come together to celebrate the year and exhibit their crafts and livestock. In town, monthly First Thursday events feature food trucks and entertainment, while to the north of Manheim, Mount Hope is home to the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire that is open August through October, as well as dinner theaters, comedy nights and other events throughout the year.

Cars are a must-have

With a single bus route through town, and limited sidewalks outside of the borough itself, residents are dependent on cars and trucks to get around. It’s a haul to get to regional travel as well, with the nearest commercial airport, Harrisburg International Airport, a 26-mile drive. Healthcare is closer, with Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center only 7 miles south, not only providing 24-hour services but also a major job contributor to the region.

Nationally recognized employers

More than just farmland, Manheim has two major businesses that bring in jobs, visitors, and so much more. Manheim, Inc., formerly known as Manheim Auto Auction, is the world’s largest wholesale auto auction company. One of its largest sites, the complex south of the borough of Manheim was developed in 1945 and continues to operate as one of the largest single auction sites in the country. Spooky Nook Sports Complex, meanwhile, is the largest indoor sports complex in the United States, hosting tournaments, conventions, and more throughout the year.
