A community centered around a park
Two miles east of Mankato's city center is Thomas Park, a sprawling residential area built around its namesake park. “It’s very convenient— you’re close to shopping, churches, schools. In fact, there’s an elementary, middle and high school all in the same area,” says Bonnie Kruger, a resident of Thomas Park and Realtor at Century 21 Atwood Realty Inc. “People like living over here.” Life in Thomas Park means access to highly rated schools, newer homes and proximity to shopping and dining while enjoying the peace of suburban living.
Newer homes sit atop sprawling lawns
Thomas Park features a sprawling suburban layout, with homes and lawns increasing in size with distance from the city center. The housing stock here is newer, with most built since 2000. Architectural styles include ranch-style homes and New Traditional, some with a Craftsman influence. For a two-bedroom two-bathroom, prices range from $350,000 to $450,000 whereas homes with five bedrooms or more cost $450,000 to $700,000.
Thomas Park
At the heart of the neighborhood is Thomas Park, which offers a lighted baseball field and a playground, as well as an ice rink in the winter. On the south end of the neighborhood is Clair's Creek Park, a woodsy reprieve offering peaceful creek-side walks along an unpaved trail.
The Mankato Public School District
The Mankato Public School District serves the residents of Thomas Park. Students can begin their education at Kennedy Elementary School and Prairie Winds Middle School, both of which scored a B-plus on Niche. Students can also attend Mankato East High School, which received a B-plus from the site. Mankato East High offers after-school programs like VEX Robotics, Planetarium Production Club and Link Crew Leaders.
Shopping and dining just a quick drive away
Located on Blazing Star Drive, Los Dos Primos Mexican Restaurant offers an authentic taste of Mexico along with premium cocktails such as the Margarito, a classic lime margarita on the rocks with extras not typically found in a routine margarita, such as a bottle of Mexican soda overturned into the glass. Locals can dine inside in the festive decor inspired by the colors of the Mexican flag or outside in view of a natural wooded spot from the patio. Just outside the neighborhood on Tullamore Street is Olde Brick House, a popular and highly rated Irish restaurant. “This one’s a home run,” says Chris Cousins, Mankato native and Realtor with Viking Real Estate. “It’s something I haven’t seen in this town for a while. It’s been very popular, and the food is really good.” For groceries, there's a Walmart Supercenter and an ALDI on Madison Avenue.
Getting around Thomas Park
Bordered by the major thoroughfares of Minnesota State Highway 22 to the east and Victory Drive to the west, residents have direct access to downtown Mankato 2 miles away. Most residents use a car to get around, as public transportation is limited. The Mankato Transit System makes two stops along Black Eagle Drive in the neighborhood. Cyclists can use the bike lanes on Hoffman Road and Prairie Winds Drive. For longer-distance travel, the Mankato Regional Airport is located about 6 miles northeast of Riverfront Park, though it's served by one airline. A broader selection of flights and destinations can be found in Minneapolis-St. Paul, about 78 miles away.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
