Hillside is a suburban Twin Cities neighborhood filled with amenities

Hillside is an amenities-filled community in the Twin Cities suburb of Maplewood, about 15 minutes northeast of downtown St. Paul. This area offers attractive residential settings and a host of neighborhood perks, including access to community parks, a golf course and an ice arena, all without leaving the neighborhood’s cozy confines. Hillside is also home to a recently built elementary school and a pair of private schools. “You have all the amenities of the city, but, at the same time, you have the suburban countryside,” says Artemisa Boston of Realty Group, Inc. “I used to live in Maplewood, and it’s very beautiful.”

Neighborhood is relatively affordable and safe for region

A variety of housing options sits along quiet streets with mature trees. Lush lawns and custom landscaping add curb appeal. Cape Cods stand out among the oldest homes. Midcentury designs include traditional ranch-style homes and multi-level homes. Contemporary homes feature driveways and attached garages. Large custom homes are the neighborhood’s most expensive. Townhomes with attached garages offer a multi-family alternative. Prices typically range from about $200,000 to around $600,000. “Mostly, Maplewood is quite affordable for the Twin Cities,” says James Davich of Inspire Realty, who sells homes throughout the region, “and it is quite safe for the money.”

Parks, golf course, ice arena among neighborhood recreational spots

Goodrich Park is the largest of the community’s traditional recreational spaces, with amenities covering 24 acres. Goodrich Golf Course features a public, 18-hole layout across the street. The adjacent Aldrich Arena offers winter sports year-round. Residents can also enjoy small, community green spaces and several nearby parks in a city known for its trail system and overall recreational opportunities. The Maplewood YMCA Community Center is minutes away. Boaters and anglers can take advantage of the Mississippi River, which winds its way through St. Paul. The city’s riverfront offers additional recreation, including parks and trails.

Justice Alan Page Elementary School named after Vikings legend

The neighborhood is served by School District 622, known more commonly as the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District. It earns a B from Niche. Younger students do not have to leave the community to attend Justice Alan Page Elementary School, which opened in 2022 and does not have a Niche grade. The school honors the former Vikings star, who was part of Minnesota’s famed Purple People Eaters defensive line of the 1970s. Page went on to become a state supreme court justice after his playing career and was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1988. Older students can attend John Glenn Middle School, rated C-plus, and North High School, rated C. Minnesota allows students to apply for transfers to schools outside of their assigned districts as part of an open enrollment program. Private options include Hill-Murray School, a co-ed Catholic institution that serves students in sixth through 12th grades, and Mounds Park Academy, a private college preparatory school that serves students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.

Maplewood's malls are only 2 miles away

Strip malls offering a variety of shopping and dining options are prominent along the White Bear Avenue commercial corridor just south of the neighborhood. There are additional options along Larpenteur Avenue. Grocery stores and big-box retailers can be found about 2 miles north of the community near White Bear Avenue and Minnesota State Highway 36. “You don’t have to go to Bloomington or Roseville to go to a mall, so that’s convenient,” Boston says.

A first-ring suburb with appealing access to St. Paul, Minneapolis

The neighborhood is only 5 miles from the world headquarters of 3M, a Fortune 500 company that is one of the major employers in the Twin Cities region. Highway 36 connects to Interstate 35, which leads directly into downtown St. Paul. The heart of the riverfront city is about a 10-mile drive from the neighborhood. Highway 36 also provides access to downtown Minneapolis, about 15 miles away. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport is about an 18-mile drive. “Maplewood is a first-ring suburb, so accessibility is a draw,” Davich says. Those in need of public transportation can catch the bus within the neighborhood for travel to local points of interest, including M Health Fairview St. John’s Hospital, about 4 miles away. Residents should be aware that travel in and around the area can be impacted by freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall during the winter.
