Maplewood’s Parkside is a comfortable, connected suburb

Packed with parks in northwest Maplewood, Parkside comes by its name honestly. The suburban neighborhood’s easy access to a plethora of outdoor recreational amenities, from community playgrounds to the sweeping Keller Regional Park on the east side, is a large part of its appeal. Proximity to retailers and restaurants in Maplewood and Roseville is another. “It’s convenient, close to a good number of options for shopping, dining and recreation – very similar to other Maplewood neighborhoods,” says Realtor Ron Knutsen of Homes Plus Realty, who has more than three decades of experience.

Single-family and townhomes sell for under $700,000

New Traditionals and Colonial Revivals, along with split-levels and ranch-style homes, line Parkside’s wide, winding streets. Many have broad front lawns and long driveways shaded with oaks, elms and cherry trees. Townhomes are available in subdivisions such as Maple Hills, Highland Townhomes and Woodlands of Maplewood. Single-family home prices start close to $190,000 and rise to about $660,000. Townhomes typically sell for between $170,000 and $445,000.

Summers are usually warm, with average high temperatures reaching 80 degrees. Winters are cold, with lows often dropping below freezing. Maplewood typically gets about 50 inches of snow annually. “The harshest weather kind of circumvents the Twin Cities area,” Knutsen says. “We’ll get our fair share of snow and rain, but it always seems to be worse to the north and the south.”

Outdoor recreation at Keller Regional Park, Parkside community parks

Keller Regional Park, the oldest park in the Ramsey County parks system, has several sections of outdoor recreational amenities. Waterfront options include a fishing pier and boat launch on Spoon Lake, as well as a boardwalk trail. There’s also a golf course, an archery range, a playground and courts for tuj lub, a traditional Hmong sport. Maplecrest Park has two playgrounds – one sunny, the other shady. Edgerton Park, next to the elementary school, has a community garden and a playground, as well as ballfields and a basketball court. The Edgerton Community Gym, attached to the school, is available to rent for sporting events and other events.

Retailers and restaurants, including Menards and Scooter’s Coffee, are scattered along Maplewood Drive within about 2 miles of most homes. Grocery options, like the Hy-Vee and the Cub on White Bear Avenue, aren’t much farther. “Roseville has some really nice shopping and restaurants, too,” Knutsen says, recommending Rosedale Center. The indoor mall has an Anthropologie, a Macy’s and a Dick’s Sporting Goods, among other retailers. There’s also an AMC movie theater and several restaurants in the area, including one of Knutsen’s favorites: Baldamar. “It’s mostly American fare,” he says. “Everything on the menu is great, I’ve never been disappointed.”
