Industry is staking a claim in rural farm town outside of Indianapolis
Sweeping fields of corn and soybeans spread as far as the eye can see in Mount Comfort. Here, the comfort lies in slower living outside of Indianapolis. Yet things are picking up speed in this unincorporated territory in the state's fastest-growing county. In recent years, companies like Amazon and Walmart have opened big warehouses near the Indianapolis Regional Airport in Mount Comfort, and new jobs, residents, and homes have followed suit. "The jobs are growing at an exponential rate, so the people taking these new jobs want to live within a comfortable driving distance," says Kerry O'Brien, pastor at Mohawk United Methodist Church. Locals typically drive outside town for shops, parks and restaurants, although they enjoy having an elementary school and fun events nearby.

Ranch-style homes with lots of land in Mount Comfort
The median price for a single-family Mount Comfort home is $306,000, compared to $250,000 for the city of Indianapolis. However, homebuyers tend to get more land for their money, with a median lot size of about one and a half acres. Some of the oldest properties include farmhouses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Midcentury ranch-style houses are frequent throughout the town. New construction is also popping up on the town's west side. Manufactured houses are on the market for around $100,000 to $220,000. Mt. Vernon school district fosters high achievement
Mount Comfort falls under the Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation, with six nearby schools earning between a B and an A-minus. The district challenges "high-ability learners" throughout the pipeline with differentiated instruction, honors classes and college credit courses. Mount Comfort Elementary School is located in the town and earns a B-plus. Mount Vernon Middle earns a B-plus, while Mount Vernon High earns a B. Both are about 9 miles north. The high school encourages early college prep through 12 Advanced Placement courses, 16 dual-credit courses and three Advanced College Project courses. It also won the 2021 4A state football championship.

The Mount Comfort food scene includes a handful of fast-food restaurants. Ranchera Bar and Grill is one local favorite serving up steak and shrimp plates and other house specials. A wider variety of dining venues are available 11 miles east in Greenfield. Lincoln Square Pancake House serves up bacon, eggs and hashbrowns in an unassuming diner setting. Mohawk United Methodist Church events are open to the public
Nearby events feature outdoor music, impressive aerial displays and bushels of fresh foods. Mohawk United Methodist Church hosts several high-demand events, including a monthly concert series featuring blues, folk and other genres. "We have a number of offerings that are open to the whole community," O'Brien says. At the Crossroads Air Show, supersonic fighter jets and historic warbirds soar through the sky. The Blue Angels headline the event, which is held sporadically at the Indianapolis Regional Airport. From May to October, Cumberland’s Farmers Market is a popular destination for supporting local farmers. Typical selections include fresh beef, pork, cheese and fruits and vegetables.
New infrastructure coming to Mount Comfort
Downtown Indianapolis is 16 miles away. The city is easy to reach thanks to Interstate 70, which runs east and west through the center of Mount Comfort. Hancock County adopted a Thoroughfare Plan in 2023 to address future growth. The plan would create additional mobility for residents on Mount Comfort's east side by adding a new I-70 interchange at County Road 200 West. It also proposes multiuse trails along CR 200 West and CR 300 West. Hancock County Senior Services and Hancock Area Rural Transit provide paratransit services by appointment. Residents over 60 can also ride HART to non-essential destinations. Indianapolis International Airport is about 28 miles west and offers nonstop flights to many destinations in the U.S. and some in Canada and Mexico.
Further West, Mount Comfort locals can access 676 to Indianapolis.
Mount Comfort has convenient access to Interstate 70 to Indianapolis or head East to Akron.
