Newer homes are transforming the neighborhood's housing options
Contemporary homes are concentrated on the neighborhood’s east side close to the city of Lawrence. This includes new homes by Lennar in planned settings such as Loudoun Place and Clifton Trace. The newest homes offer driveways and attached garages in walkable settings, and monthly HOA fees range from $42 to $67. Clifton Trace features community amenities such as a pool and playscapes. The rest of the neighborhood is taken up by pockets of established homes. Ranch-style and other midcentury designs are prominent. Prices typically range from around $100,000 to the mid-$300,000s. Condos can also be found, and they typically range from around $70,000 to the low $100,000s. The median sales price is in the low $200,000s. That’s on par with neighboring East Warren , but higher than neighboring Arlington Woods (mid-$100,000s).

Community organizations work to keep residents “connected and engaged”
The Melanin in May Festival the Eastside Festival are signature annual events organized by the Community Alliance of the Far Eastside. They feature live music, food, games and information booths offering resources such as health services, job opportunities and educational support. The Pathway Resource Center has traditionally hosted an annual Far Eastside Peace Walk to bring awareness to youth gun violence. The Far Eastside Community Council keeps an extensive list of events on its website, feccindy.org. “The Far Eastside is a family-centered community with very active and engaged resident leaders. If you just watch the news, you miss that. Sure, there are challenges, but our residents are amazing and resilient people,” says Samantha Douglas, president of the FECC. “Our greatest asset is our people. We are doing our best to build a community that’s more connected and engaged.”
Neighborhood elementaries represent three school districts
The community is served by three school districts, and each has an elementary school in the neighborhood:
Indianapolis Public Schools, which includes Charles W. Fairbanks School No. 105
Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, which includes Winding Ridge Elementary School
Metropolitan School District of Warren Township, which includes Sunny Heights Elementary School
IPS allows young students to choose from any of the elementary and middle schools in their enrollment zone, and there is no zoning for high schools. Both Lawrence Township and Warren Township allow students to apply for transfers to schools outside of their geographic zones as well as to another district.
Residents can stay active at Grassy Creek Regional Park
Grassy Creek Regional Park is a popular destination in the heart of the community. Amenities include a large, renovated playground with a jungle gym, climbing nets and swings. Basketball and tennis courts are also available for those looking to stay active. Visitors enjoy access to the Grassy Creek Regional Trail, which winds through wetlands and forested areas. The park’s Grassy Creek Environmental Community Center serves as a hub for environmental education and activities. Dubarry Park offers more athletic amenities and a fishing pond. Plaza Urbana is a local indoor marketplace for restaurants along 38th Street, the neighborhood’s primary commercial corridor. Several Dollar stores can be found in the community, which offers markets specializing in Latin and African food. Community Alliance of the Far East Side, in partnership with Hatch for Hunger, introduced a free community fridge at the Far Eastside Neighborhood Center in 2024. Menards and Lowe’s are in the neighborhood along the Interstate 465 and Interstate 70 corridors, respectively. Both areas offer more restaurants. Kroger and Walmart are among the many shopping options in neighboring Lawrence. Washington Square Mall is about 4 miles away in East Warren.

Buses provide local access, while interstates offer longer commutes
The IndyGo Purple line runs through the neighborhood along 38th Street, and the Eastside connector serves other areas of the community. The Purple Line runs from nearby Lawrence to downtown. The connector provides transportation to local points of interest, including the Warren Township Government Center and the Washington Square Mall. Residents enjoy a convenient commute downtown via I-70, which forms the neighborhood’s southern border. The 12-mile drive can be made in about 20 minutes. Interstate 70 also provides the quickest route to Indianapolis International airport, the center of a national transportation and logistics hub. That drive is about 24 miles and can be made in under 30 minutes. The commute to the airport via I-465, which forms the neighborhood’s western border, is about 3 miles longer.
IndyGo bus routes are easily accessible for Far Eastside residents.
