Cedar Park
Neighborhood in Melrose, Massachusetts
Middlesex County 02176
Older Colonial Revivals and New Englanders with Victorian-era accents
Cedar Park is mostly residential, and common styles include smaller Cape Cods and larger New Englander and Colonial Revival-inspired homes that were built between the 1850s and 1950s. Many homes are set closer to the street, with access to the sidewalks and roads and room for garages or patios. “Melrose is known for having more Victorian-style designs,” says Lauren Grymek, the chief of staff at Melrose City Hall, who has lived in the area for over 12 years. “A lot of the homes are so old that the historical society has their own ‘research your house’ nights where you can find out info on the previous owners of your house.” Prices for smaller single-family homes fall between $600,000 and $800,000, while larger and more historic homes can range from $800,000 to $1.6 million.Local green spaces and the Stone Zoo
Bowden Park, the only green space in the neighborhood, is a peaceful spot for relaxing during a lunch break. The park is also home to the Melrose Farmers’ Market, which takes place each Thursday afternoon. West of the neighborhood, the Middlesex Fells Reservation provides over 4 square miles of land filled with trails, water access and camping sites. “The community also has the Friends of the Fells organization, which organizes a bunch of events to get residents outside, from group tours to picnics and campouts,” Grymek says. The reservation is also home to Stone Zoo, a private zoo with over 60 unique species of animals. “It’s crazy that the zoo is so close to us,” Grymek says. “The zoo also hosts tons of events throughout the year, from adult-only nights to zoo lights in the winter.” Just east of the neighborhood is Ell Pond, another popular Melrose park with a community pool, skatepark and a dog park.Extracurriculars in Melrose public schools
Lincoln Elementary School, the closest school to the downtown area, earns an A-minus rating on Niche. Students can then continue to Melrose Middle School, which also scores an A-minus. The A-minus-rated Melrose High School is the final stop for students. The school is well known for its extracurriculars, including its football team, whose annual game has become a Thanksgiving tradition for the city, and the school’s high-ranking robotics team.Melrose community festivals and holiday events
Each September, Main Street is filled with dozens of booths of local crafts and festival treats during the Annual Victorian Fair. The event also offers carnival rides and presentations from local organizations. Main Street is closed off again for three days each December for the Home For the Holidays event. These days are packed with holiday-themed activities, including craft fairs, carolers and visits from Santa during the city’s annual tree lighting. Two commuter rail stations on the neighborhood's eastern end
Melrose itself is only around 5 square miles, making many daily destinations easily walkable along its well-maintained sidewalks. “People tend to walk everywhere in Melrose,” Grymek says. “From walking to the library or local businesses, you always tend to see people out and about.” For commuting and travel, residents can access two different commuter rail stops, with both the Melrose/Cedar Park and Wyoming Hill stations nearby. Drivers can reach Interstate 93, 5 miles from the neighborhood, streamlining the 10-mile commute to downtown Boston. MelroseWakefield Hospital is less than a mile from the community, and Boston Logan International Airport is 11 miles to the south.Fresh seafood and Melrose's first brewery
Nearby dining options include Turner’s Seafood, which serves a variety of daily specials and sells fish wholesale to restaurants and residents. Giacomo's is an Italian restaurant with large portions, wine and cocktail options and a lively atmosphere. Hannah's Brewing Co. opened in March of 2024 and is the area's first brewery due to the fact that Melrose was a dry city until 2009. Residents can shop at the downtown Shaw's or Whole Foods. They can also get fresh, locally sourced produce at the Melrose Farmers’ Market every Thursday afternoon.
