The best of the Blues City, with room to spread out
Berclair brings the Blues City’s quirky dining scene to the suburbs with a taste of the traditional and more. Between a mural of Godzilla holding a snow cone and award-winning barbeque served from what the owners describe as a shack, this neighborhood is full of surprises. Berclair is just north of the famous Summer Avenue, once known as the “Highway of America,” now known for its eclectic restaurant scene from cultures near and far. With easy access to shopping and dining, Berclair does suburbia Memphis-style.

Shaded streets and modest homes
Berclair’s gridded streets are lined with shade trees, providing much-needed relief during Tennessee’s scorching summers and color during the fall. Houses range in style from Craftsmans and cottages to split-levels and ranches, with most built in the early-to-mid-1900s. Prices vary depending on condition and most homes are priced between $125,000 and $275,000. Outliers, including homes with historical relevance or modern renovations, are priced in the low $300,000s. Many Berclair houses have wrought-iron porch accents and patterned brick facades, remnants of postwar styles from the neighborhood’s early days.

From BBQ to snow cones
Monica Mauricio, a Realtor with Re/Max Experts of Memphis, says that Berclair is one of her favorite neighborhoods. Driven into retreat with the advent of big-box stores, Summer Avenue struggled for a period of time, and got "sleepy,'' she said. But when new residents, many from other countries, began to arrive, Summer Avenue woke up to welcome a new batch of ethnic dining choices, and some from closer to home. "If you want to feel like you’re traveling without leaving your hometown, it’s the place to be, with all sorts of cuisines—from Mexican to Asian, to Middle Eastern, to Southern comfort food,'' Mauricio said.
It's here hungry residents and visitors will find such places as La Guadalupana, a hot spot for Mexican food known for its specialty tacos and guacamole; El Sabator Latino's Colombian food; Queen of Sheba's Yemeni-inspired menu; Yang's Deli for Chinese and two other spots worth noting.
Tucked behind a laundromat and a barber shop, Elwood’s Shack doesn’t look like much from the outside. But looks can be deceiving—this Memphis favorite was featured on season four of the Food Network’s Burgers, Brew & ‘Que’s television show in 2018 and remains on the network's best places to eat list years later. Glowing reviews mention Elwood’s hefty smoked meats and country-barbeque breakfast burritos.
For a frozen experience, along with that mural of a classic monster movie star sampling a frozen treat, visit Jerry's Sno Cones, where 80 flavors apparently aren't enough. They'll slap a twist of soft-serve ice cream on top of the icy snow cone if desired. Burgers and other treats are available in the hot-pink building.
According to Mauricio, local food trucks travel all around the neighborhood. “Since we have so many options, everyone has their own favorite,” Mauricio says.
Jerrys Snow Cones and Burger Shack is possibly the most widely known business in Berclair.
