A trendy Memphis neighborhood anchored by Crosstown Concourse

The Crosstown neighborhood of Memphis got its name from the 14-story Sears store and warehouse built there in 1927 — it was located at the intersection of two streetcar lines. Today, the neighborhood is still built around the complex, which was redeveloped into a mixed-use destination called Crosstown Concourse after Sears left it vacant. Crosstown Concourse is the neighborhood’s heart of activity, with retail, restaurants, art galleries, apartments and even a school. The development attracts younger buyers to the area, who also like its access to employers in Downtown Memphis.

Bungalows available in Crosstown at prices comparable to nearby areas

The Crosstown residential grid was laid out in the early 20th century, and most of the neighborhood’s homes date from that era. “Around the Concourse, it’s bungalows, one after another,” says Leigh Martin, a Realtor with Hobson and a life-long Memphian. There are also a few open lots that people can buy to build their own houses, though the aesthetic remains similar even for modern homes. Prices range from around $50,000 to $300,000, often based on renovation status. More residents rent their homes rather than own, including at the apartments at Crosstown Concourse. The median sales price is $200,000, which is on par with Downtown Memphis and Uptown Memphis, but lower than Midtown Memphis.

You can choose from Memphis-Shelby County schools or charter options

Crosstown is in the Memphis-Shelby County Schools district, though the neighborhood is broken up into several attendance zones. Some kids are zoned to Central High School, which is highly rated. But kids have other options, including charter schools like Crosstown High School. The top-rated school is located at Crosstown Concourse and offers real-world experience, including apprenticeships and internships.

Attractions include Crosstown Concourse's arts and local businesses

Crosstown Concourse opened in 2017 after Sears left it in the 1990s. Today, it’s a neighborhood hub for the arts and local businesses. “Crosstown Concourse is kind of a little bit of a miracle. It was empty. It was a distribution center for Sears and Roebuck for this whole part of the country, and it was just a massive, huge building,” Martin says. “It was just a group of people from Memphis who did a great job.” Crosstown Arts is headquartered in the building and features exhibitions in its galleries, as well as musical performances at the Crosstown Theater and the Green Room. The complex is also home to plenty of retail spots and local restaurants:

  • Farm Burger Memphis, which is a popular spot with a focus on sustainability
  • Crosstown Brewing, which has a full-service bar and restaurant alongside its beer
  • The Mad Grocer, which offers a small market and a food counter
Martin points out Briza in particular as a standout in Crosstown Concourse. It’s an upscale eatery known for steaks and seafood.

Other shops and restaurants available throughout the neighborhood

Otherwise, shops and restaurants are scattered along the neighborhood’s main roads. There’s a Kroger on Cleveland Street for groceries, alongside a Walgreens and fast-food spots like Burger King and McDonald’s. Tops Bar-B-Q is a Memphis staple along Jackson Avenue, while Cozy Corner is a homey rib joint on North Parkway. More shopping options are in nearby Midtown.

Nearby recreation includes Winchester Park and Overton Park

There’s not a ton of green space in Crosstown, though Winchester Park does have a playground and sports field. But lots of people use the V&E Greenline for recreation, which starts at Crosstown Concourse and heads east. It’s popular with bikers and joggers. Overton Park is close by, too. It has a playground and walking trails through the woods, plus a nine-hole golf course. It’s also home to the Memphis Zoo, which is popular with locals.

Easy commutes to the nearby Medical District

Memphis’ Medical District is next to Crosstown. The hospitals and medical schools, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, are some of Memphis’ largest employers. There are sidewalks throughout Crosstown, and several bus lines serve the neighborhood. But people still tend to drive to work and anywhere else they need to go. It’s also easy to get on the Interstate — I-40 meets up with I-69 in the neighborhood.
