Rural living outside of Memphis

On the outskirts of Memphis in southwestern Tennessee, Gray’s Creek’s atmosphere gives its residents the tranquil environment of rural living while still making it easy to get to the nightlife of downtown. Its wide span of home prices, large lots and history, be it one of the area’s first brick homes or a longstanding stagecoach inn, means it has much to offer amid its nature-filled landscape. “It’s a rural setting close to the suburbs but still near city amenities,” says “Big Jon” Dickens, a real estate associate with The FIRM Memphis Real Estate. “People love living in the areas that surround Memphis, and Gray’s Creek is just east enough of town to be secluded with a nice rural feel yet still very close to the city. It’s unique, encompasses a broad area and is multi-generational.”

An expansive range of home prices

Gray’s Creek is known for its wide range of home prices, which can typically range from around $450,000 to upwards of $3 million. Recently-sold homes have primarily sold in the vicinity of $250,000 to $400,000 or $500,000 to $800,000. “It’s mostly residential,” Dickens says. “There’s spots of commercial areas on the western side since that haven’t grown out far enough, so Gray’s Creek is more of a rural setting with winding, two-lane roads and lots of acreage – anywhere from five-to-20-acre properties. Prices depend on the area.” Gated communities also exist, and home styles as a whole tend to include traditional designs, ranch houses, brick Cape Cod architecture and even cottages, modern log cabins and Greek revivals.

A three-school educational journey

At Macon-Hall Elementary School, rated at a C-plus by Niche, students from kindergarten through fifth grade receive an education before graduating to Mt. Pisgah Middle School. Given a C rating by Niche, the Cordova school provides education from to eighth grades with a student-to-teacher ratio of 19 to one. Germantown High School completes grade-school levels in the Gray’s Creek area, receiving a C-plus from Niche while serving as a magnet school for the area and a highly-ranking destination for student-athletes.

Popular dining outside Gray’s Creek

Two of the most popular hangouts are TJ Mulligans, a sports bar on the western side of Gray’s Creek right on Houston Levee Road, and YNOT Cigar Bar & Lounge, which is located in the Houston Levee Shopping Center and offers live music, DJs, karaoke and more. General errands for groceries can be fulfilled at a nearby Kroger on the west side or an Aldi to the north, as well. “Shopping and restaurants are more so found outside Gray’s Creek,” Dickens says. “That’s more into east Memphis, about 15 to 20 minutes away.”

Watery habitats and nearby parks

The Long Ryders’ song “State of My Union” describes a landscape of “lakes and rivers, with lots of fields and streams.” The band wasn’t describing Gray’s Creek, but it’s apt for the layout of the Tennessee neighborhood. The expansive area is peppered with many small bodies of water scattered throughout, and the entire southern boundary consists of the Wolf River separating Gray’s Creek from Collierville. Hinton Park is located close to the southwestern corner of the neighborhood, offering its visitors a playground, soccer fields and a walking trail. Floyd Bryan Memorial Park, located just inside the eastern boundary, features a pair of baseball diamonds.

Hitting the links or waves in Gray’s Creek

Miles of trails make up the Collierville Greenbelt, which is comprised of paved and natural pathways winding through expansive woodland. At Spring Creek Ranch’s golf course, located near the southeastern corner of Gray’s Creek, test your skills on a set of links designed by Jack Nicklaus himself. “There’s also an equine community out here,” Dickens says. “A lot of people like to ride, and this is the closest area where people like to do that. Most people’s recreation in Gray’s Creek is just being outside on their acreage, but they can also go kayaking or canoeing on the Wolf River.”

Close proximity to Memphis

Interstate 269 snakes along the eastern boundary of Gray’s Creek, part of a larger beltway surrounding part of Memphis. It’s about 30 miles and 45 minutes from the neighborhood to the downtown part of the city. Route 64, which runs from close to the intersection of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona in the west all the way to the eastern coast, also makes up the upper border of Gray’s Creek, meaning road trips aren’t out of the question.
