Homes in the Hollywood neighborhood typically range from around $50,000 to $80,000, though residences can also sell for as low as under $25,000 or for over $100,000. Most houses in the area are concentrated in the southern, central part of Hollywood, with many built in the early 20th century or the 1950s and falling on the smaller side. "It's an established area for older homes not far from downtown Memphis," says Ludora Cooper, the principal broker and owner of Prime Realty & Investments. "I actually grew up there -- that's my childhood neighborhood." Cooper also says some properties are generational, having been passed down through families over time. A compact neighborhood, Hollywood consists of minimal traditional architecture, ranches and shotgun houses. There's also some Craftsman-style influences and brick construction, as well as other flair like awnings, side-gabled roofs or wrought-iron door cages. Gardens or personal touches add a level of comfort and an established nature to the residential area, and many of the homes there are multi-generational. Crime in the Hollywood area has a CAP index of 8 out of 10, significantly above the national average of 4, with scores of 10 for homicide and assault with a weapon.Parks close by and within Hollywood
The Hollywood Community Center is a prime spot for indoor recreation and programs, offering a gym and various classes, and the Hollywood Walking Trail is a popular destination for outdoor exercise. The trailhead to the Wolf River Greenway is accessible within the neighborhood, which consists of a paved path by the waterfront with the shade of trees overhead, and the river winds through the entire northern portion of Hollywood. Kilowatt and Sandpit Lakes both lie in the western half of the area, where residents can cast a line or two, and Lucille Price Park offers a basketball court, a pond and playground. “Greenbelt Park on Mud Island, as well as Mud Island itself, are a huge recreational draw,” Parker says. “There’s a museum over there, canoe and kayak rentals and a couple marinas for houseboats and speedboats.” Mud Island lies on the Mississippi River to the west. Overton Park encompasses the Memphis Zoo, a golf course, art museum and more.Schools outside Hollywood
Douglass K-8 Optional School and Douglass High School are among the area’s educational institutions, both situated to the east of the neighborhood. Douglass K-8 serves as an elementary school and middle school, receiving a C-minus from Niche. Douglass High School is within walking distance of its precursor, receiving a C from Niche. Its athletic teams play as the Red Devils and varsity sports for students enrolled there include baseball, softball and basketball.Annual fairs and celebrations
Downtown Memphis and the surrounding area are the sites of events every year, including a number of festivals and fairs. The annual Delta Fair & Music Festival runs for more than a week late in the summer, with pageants, dancing contests and events spotlighting music. There's also live music performances by local, regional and national artists, as well as a demolition derby, meet-and-greets and more. Annual celebrations also include Pride parades, Juneteenth gatherings and a variety of events throughout November and December to ring in and commemorate the holiday season. “Right off Beale Street, in downtown Memphis, is the FedEx Forum, where there’s concerts, Memphis Tigers games and Memphis Grizzlies games,” says Parker, who grew up in the area and has lived most of his life downtown. “A great place is Itta Bena, named for the town in Mississippi that BB King is from, and he and a conglomerate owned that right above BB King’s Music Club.”Quick drives down to Memphis
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway, also designated Interstate 40, comprises the entire northern boundary of Hollywood, meaning that downtown Memphis is just less than 10 miles south. I-40 also connects the area with Nashville about 200 miles northeast and, as a whole, spans nearly the entire country. The state line with Arkansas is just to the west, across the Mississippi River, while three interchanges – one each at the northwestern and northeastern corners and a third between them – also make up portions of Hollywood’s borders. To the west, I-40 joins with Interstate 69 for a short stretch. I-69 runs northeast from Texas to Michigan, though it's split into multiple segments. "It's not far from downtown Memphis or midtown Memphis," Cooper says. "It's definitely close to the highway, and you can get on the highway and go anywhere in the city."Restaurants on Chelsea Avenue
Diners can head to one of myriad nearby eateries and stores for a dash of local flavor. 2 Star Jr. has served its customers hot wings and late-night burgers for about a decade, while JC’s Crumpy Hotwings and Trevie’s Sweeties are just beyond the southern line. Edna Diner does exactly what its tagline says and serves breakfast and lunch to its patrons just within the southeastern corner of Hollywood. For more general shopping, the Frayser Village Shopping Center down North Hollywood Street has a Kroger, while stores within the neighborhood include Wing & Lam Grocery, Hyde Park Grocery and Friendly Food Market. “Right off Beale Street, in downtown Memphis, is the FedEx Forum, where there’s concerts, Memphis Tigers games and Memphis Grizzlies games,” says Parker, who grew up in the area and has lived most of his life downtown. “A great place is Itta Bena, named for the town in Mississippi that BB King is from, and he and a conglomerate owned that right above BB King’s Music Club.” Overton Park, the largest green space in the area around Hollywood, is also surrounded by streets lined with restaurants. "Overton Park is in the heart of the city," Cooper says. "Near Overton Square is where you've got your restaurants and entertainment district. It's bikeable and walkable."
