Hyde Park is a suburb of Memphis that offers home buyers accessible housing options. “The neighborhood has a lot of opportunities,” says William Haynes, Realtor with the Tyler Tapley Team of Crye-Leike Realtors, and resident of Memphis for over a decade. “People are showing interest because of the proximity to Berclair, which has schools that people like and lots of parks.” Throughout Hyde Park, sidewalks are common, and many homes are lined with tidy hedges. Residents can shop at neighborhood convenience stores and grab a quick meal at locally owned restaurants. With a variety of transportation options, the community is a good jumping-off place for enjoying the greater Memphis area.
Many transportation options around Hyde Park
Those looking to take public transportation can catch Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) buses along North Hollywood Street, Springdale Street, and Vollintine Avenue. The Memphis Central train station is approximately 8 miles from the neighborhood, and Memphis International Airport is also about 8 miles away; it has nonstop flights to more than 30 destinations. “Hyde Park is close to major roadways; you can get to interstates and zip around town,” Haynes says. “Memphis is very driver-friendly. There’s a loop around the city that makes it easy to get from point a to point b.”
Finding the right home in Hyde Park
Housing options in Hyde Park consist mainly of single-family homes and duplexes built during the early to mid-1900s. Buyers may find two-bedroom bungalows in need of serious upgrades listed between $40,000 and $80,000, and those looking for a turnkey, already updated house might find a Tudor Revival-style residence or a Colonial Revival home priced between $175,000 and $375,000. “Hyde Park has a lot of really charming 1930s and 1910s homes,” Haynes says.
Restaurants along Chelsea Avenue and Jackson Avenue
Throughout the neighborhood, there are many “small bodegas and little mom-and-pop shops,” Haynes says. Residents can stop in for essentials and for fresh vegetables and fruit, Fresh Produce on Wheels, run by Donna D'Boyata, periodically drives around the area. There are also two Kroger grocery stores nearby. One is about 3 miles southeast, and the other is about 3 miles southwest. Hyde Park community members can also find several restaurants throughout the neighborhood. Along Chelsea Avenue, 2 Star Jr. offers wings to go, but diners may need to wait in line for a bit — it’s quite popular. Yum's Chinese Carry Out and Yomama are two options on Jackson Avenue. Those looking for a night out and some live, Memphis-style blues can visit Wild Bill's Juke Joint, about 1 mile west.
Gooch Park and community centers
Gooch Park is the neighborhood's primary green space. This 10-acre city park has a basketball court, a pavilion and even a lighted swimming pool. A short walk from there is University Park, with tennis courts, ball fields and a playground. Less than 0.5 mile north of Chelsea Avenue are the Douglass Community Center and the Hollywood Community Center, which add more recreational opportunities, including a splash pad and an indoor basketball court. The Hollywood Community Center also hosts social events and adult classes where neighbors can come together and mingle. Animal lovers can find the Memphis Zoo around 2 miles away, which is home to red pandas, lions and giraffes.
Manassas High School serves area youth
Some area children may attend William H. Brewster Elementary School, which earns a C on Niche and is a S.T.E.A.M. Designated School. The neighborhood lies at the intersection of several elementary school zones, and Springdale Elementary School, with a C rating, and Vollentine Elementary School, with a C-minus, are other possible elementary schools. Students can transition to Grandview Heights Middle School, which gets a C-minus. They can continue learning at C-minus-rated Manassas High School. Within the neighborhood, there are two public charter school options: KIPP Memphis Collegiate High School, with a B-minus score, and Promise Academy, an elementary school with a C-minus. Those looking for continued educational opportunities can find Rhodes College, a private liberal arts college, around 2 miles to the south.
Memphis area events are plentiful
There are always events in Memphis for those who wish to stay busy. For example, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest takes place in May at Liberty Park, just over 3 miles from Hyde Park. In October, music lovers can head to the Memphis Botanic Gardens, about 8 miles away, for a three-day music festival called Mempho.
Area considerations
Train tracks run through the neighborhood, which newcomers might find disruptive to their sleep. “Memphis has a rich history of being a transit hub,” Haynes says. “We are totally habituated to the sound of trains.” According to the CAP Index, Hyde Park has a crime score that exceeds the national average. The city funds several community centers nearby, including the Douglass Community Center and Hollywood Community Center, where locals can connect with resources.
