Ranch-style classic Memphis homes
In both Memphis and Whitehaven, ranch-style homes dominate the landscape for homebuyers. Many of these homes were built in the early to mid-1900s and are often set back from the street for ample front yard space shaded by local mature maple and poplar trees. There is also often plenty of driveway space for vehicles as well as a garage or carport to protect homes from the elements. Housing prices can range from $60,000 to $350,000, depending on if the home needs any renovations or not. “There are a lot of retired folks in the community, and when they pass on, their kids move into those homes. So, it is really hard to get a house in Whitehaven; when they do come on the market they don’t stay long.”Memphis parks to suit all needs
Residents of Whitehaven have plenty of parks for enjoying the fresh air. David Carnes Park is a popular choice for families with a summer splash pad, an inclusive playground and a multitude of fitness spaces. Locals looking for nature can head to Otis Redding Park, which is especially popular for its picnic spots and walking trails. Indoor fun can be found at Raines-Finley Park, which is also home to the Whitehaven Community Center and offers several sports fields for exercise and fun.Memphis- Shelby County Schools
The area has over 30 schools, so there are plenty of options residents can choose from depending on where they live in the area. Students may start out at Whitehaven Elementary School, which receives a C- minus rating on Niche. Students can also attend Havenview Middle School, which also rates a C- minus. Students can also choose to attend the C-plus rated Whitehaven High School, where in April of 2023, more than 80 Whitehaven High seniors each received over $1 million in academic scholarships.Holiday events and Graceland extravaganzas
Whitehaven is best known for Graceland and the Graceland Soundstage, which hosts numerous musical events year-round, but there are plenty of annual events bringing the community together. One such event is Elvis Week, which takes place in August each year to honor his life, music and movies. “It has thousands of visitors each year,” Woodley says, and many come from all around the world to honor the King of Rock and Roll. For more community-centered events, locals can attend the Memphis Christmas Parade in Whitehaven as well as the Tree Lighting in the winter, where residents can see local groups march the streets and Graceland light up with holiday cheer.Walking and driving made easy near Graceland
U.S. Route 51, also known as Elvis Presley Boulevard, is the main vein of the neighborhood that provides access to shopping, dining and transportation and leads to Graceland. The area also has proximity to Interstate 55 and East Shelby Drive, both of which are major roads for reaching the greater Memphis area. For those who do not want to drive, the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) buses have stations all around the neighborhood, mainly on Elvis Presley Boulevard. However, even with the noise from the interstate and major local roads, “it is a great area to see people out walking their dogs and is a very quiet community,” Woodley says. Memphis International Airport is just outside the neighborhood and takes residents to all corners of the US.Shopping and Dining
Many residents of Whitehaven can find most of their shopping and dining along Elvis Presley Boulevard. This can range from established staples at B J's Buffalo Style Hot Wings, which “has been there for over 20 years” and “often has a line around the block,” Woodley says. Locals can also head to Marlowe's Ribs & Restaurant, which “has really great ribs” and “a big pink Cadillac limo to pick up some customers from nearby hotels,” Woodley says. Additional shopping is available at South Plaza or the Southland Mall as well as Kroger, Cash Saver, and Aldi also along the boulevard for plenty of grocery options, with many more being scattered around the neighborhood.Respect the Haven and local hospitals
Overall, Whitehaven has a crime score of 7, according to the CAP Index. Many local groups, such as Respect the Haven, are working diligently to help the area through social, civic, educational, and economic development. For medical care, locals are a short drive away from Methodist South Hospital in the heart of the neighborhood which specializes in cardiology and emergency care.
