Loudonville
Suburban Neighborhood in Albany, New York
Albany County 12189, 12204, 12205, 12211
Residential streets with architectural variety
Most homes in Loudonville date to between 1950 and 2000, though many were also constructed before 1950, and sit in various subdivisions around Loudonville. “It’s a neighborhood with mostly single-family homes,” Brosen says. “It’s a mix. In the older parts of town, you’ll have mid-century ranches and split-levels, which are always popular; some new, large homes from the late 1990s and early 2000s; and you’ll also have old, beautiful Tudor-styles and colonials from the early 20th century.” Prices for single-family homes commonly fall between around $200,000 and $400,000, though larger properties can go for up to $800,000 or even above $1 million. Trees and foliage lining the yards create a sense of privacy, and some homes sit back from the road thanks to large front yards. An A-plus-rated school district
Students can go to Loudonville Elementary School from kindergarten through fifth grade, categorized within the North Colonie Central School District. The district receives an A-plus rating from Niche and the school itself garners an A. “It’s a great school district, one of the highest rated in that area,” Brosen says. Shaker Middle School gets an A as well, and after eighth grade there, the A-plus-rated Shaker High School follows. Niche considers it the best high school in the Albany area and ranks it the 51st-best public high school in New York out of almost 1,300. It also ranks in the top 100 when it comes to student-athletes, and Bison sports teams include baseball and softball.Statewide trails and parks along the Hudson
The Crossings Park of Colonie is the largest green space in the neighborhood, spanning more than 100 acres. “It’s not far from parks at all,” Broser says. “When you’re in most parts of Loudonville, you’re 5 to 10 minutes from Crossings Park. It’s got a pond, community room space, several playgrounds and wide-open fields.” A maze and walking path are among the other amenities there, as well as a fitness and recreation center. Other open spaces include Schuyler Flatts Cultural Park, which sits near the Hudson River, and a trailhead of the Empire State Trail is situated close to Schuyler Flatts. Overall, the trail is part of a network crossing New York and linking Albany as far as Buffalo, New York City and the Canadian border.Community gatherings and local concerts
Along with the Crossings Park of Colonie’s amenities, the community is also very active on its grounds. “It’s a very popular park,” Broser says. “They hold concerts there in the summer, and there’s always events going on.” Along with the summer concert series, the park hosts a farmers market every May through September. Other nearby events can be found in the downtown areas, like the Albany Chefs’ Food & Wine Festival, which spotlights local establishments and individuals’ culinary skills. Also in downtown, Washington Park’s Tulip Festival is a draw for thousands every spring as the flowers bloom, and the MVP Arena hosts sports like basketball, lacrosse and arena football, as well as concerts and Monster Jam showcases.Restaurants, shopping malls and entertainment in Loudonville
An expansive collection of eateries and storefronts can be found in Loudonville. “There’s actually a couple little shopping plazas,” Brosen says. “They’ve really beefed them up the last couple years. Inside of those, there’s a series of different restaurants. There’s the Madison Café, Beer Bones and also a good mix of different ethnic cuisines. We’ve got really good Indian restaurants, Thai and more variety.” Cider Belly Doughnuts, just off Central Avenue, can start the day off with a baked treat, and on Central itself are establishments like Bombay Bistro, Tengu Asian Bistro and Ralph’s Tavern. In the northwestern corner, the Colonie Center shopping mall has shopping outlets like Barnes & Noble, L.L. Bean and a Whole Foods Market; nearby restaurants like IHOP, BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse and Buca di Beppo Italian; and a Regal Cinemas within for the latest flicks. The shopping center is along Wolf Road and just beside an interchange of the Adirondack Northway, and more restaurants sit farther down along Wolf Road. Schuyler Bakery, Patrick’s Pub and Ted’s Fish Fry are along 3rd Avenue, close to the river.Motoring around or flying beyond Albany
The main downtown area of Albany is only about five miles to the south, accessible via Route 9, which runs the length of the state and bisects Loudonville. “You can get to downtown Albany, depending on where you are, in 10 to 15 minutes,” Brosen says. “Loudonville is nicely situated and a few minutes from the airport and all of our major highways like Interstate 90 and Interstate 87.” Route 9 and Interstate 90 meet at a directional interchange on the southern edge, and New York is one of the easternmost states the nationwide freeway runs through. Residents are as little as four miles from the airport, which is situated to the northwest and has destinations as far west as Denver.
