About Mercerville, NJ

A cluster of suburban homes between Trenton and Princeton

Home to just over 13,000 residents, the tiny town of Mercerville, New Jersey, is often overshadowed by its neighboring communities. “Mercerville is a post office and very small town within the larger Hamilton Township,” says Realtor Tony Rosica with Keller Williams Premier, who has over 30 years of experience in the area. “Most don’t know it because of the size, but Hamilton was incorporated in 1842 and has a lot of history. George Washington’s famous march from the Second Battle of Trenton came through here. It’s developed over the years, but its identity has pretty much remained the same.” The town stands between Trenton and Princeton, with many residents commuting to either Philadelphia or New York City for work. Although George Washington passed through, residents know Mercerville as a quiet hamlet where it is well worth settling down.

Farms are scattered throughout Mercerville's residential streets

The median home price in Mercerville is around $425,000, which is below the national median. Colonial architecture is most common on the closely packed suburban streets, although midcentury split-levels and ranch-style homes can also be found. “In that Hamilton area, in general, most land has already been developed,” Rosica says. “Mainly, you’ll see resale of condos, duplexes and single-family homes. There is also a wide array of farms, though, many of which have been preserved.” These farms are scattered throughout, providing splashes of green space within the weave of sidewalk-lined roads.

Mercer County Park is a hub of outdoor activity

Mercer County Park is the largest green space in the area. It is home to several baseball diamonds, a pair of cricket pitches and an ice rink. “The park also offers Mercer Lake, one of the largest man-made lakes in New Jersey,” Rosica says. “People can go boating and fishing, and it has a rowing house for crew teams. The park does wildlife tours, and there’s an extensive tennis facility that features over 20 courts, both indoor and outdoor.” Residents can also follow trail markers throughout the town tracing the path taken by George Washington’s Continental Army as they marched from the Battle of Trenton to the Battle of Princeton.

Residents can commute to larger cities by car or train

Interstate 295 is the closest major highway, cutting through the west side of Mercerville and looping around Trenton. “Mercerville has easy access to Interstates 95 and 195 and to the New Jersey Turnpike as well,” Rosica says. “And it’s next to the Hamilton Train Station, which services lines that will get you to Philadelphia and New York City. Many residents make those commutes.”

A local sculpture garden and CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton

Although it is a short train ride from either Philadelphia and New York City, residents do not need to travel that far for entertainment. “Grounds for Sculpture is right next door,” Rosica says. “That’s a museum and sculpture park with over 270 installations.” The garden hosts several exhibits and workshops throughout the year. Locals can also head to CURE Insurance Arena in nearby Trenton for indoor dirt track racing, professional lacrosse games and concerts.
