Condos, consulates and convenience
The Coral Gables neighborhood of Douglas is sandwiched between two of the area’s most concentrated shopping and dining districts, making it a convenient and pedestrian-friendly area. This urban neighborhood includes more condo complexes than most Coral Gables communities, especially along main roads such as Ponce de Leon Boulevard. Local businesses occupy ground-level storefronts with everything from law and doctors’ offices to banks and cozy cafés. “Residents can walk downtown every morning and get their coffee or shop or do anything they want to do,” says Coral Gables native Ginger Jochem, broker and owner of the Slesnick and Jochem real estate team. The city also operates a free trolley service that leads to Miracle Mile, a buzzing stretch of downtown Coral Gables home to the city’s largest concentration of galleries, museums and restaurants.
Douglas is home to the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences. It occupies the historic Puerta del Sol — also called the Douglas Entrance — a Mediterranean Revival building with grand arches built in 1927 that served as one of the original entrances to the city. In addition to two churches, the neighborhood supports multiple of the city’s international consulates, including Peru, Guatemala, Beliz and Monaco. “[The consulate offices] have a lot of parties for dignitaries. They have police that patrol the streets, and it’s never an issue,” Jochem says.

Dine and shop in downtown Coral Gables
Small shops and cafes, including the Cuban coffeehouse Tinta Y Café, dot the neighborhood. And there’s a convenient Publix on Douglas Road. But most shopping and dining options are either on Southwest Eight Street, Calle Ocho to locals, or in downtown Coral Gables. Cuban cuisine is Calle Ocho's highlight. Versailles Restaurant opened in 1971 and has expanded to include a Cuban bakery. Other favorites, like Original Uncle Toms Barbecue, have served the community since the 1940s.
The walkable Miracle Mile corridor is known for its bridal boutiques, theaters, restaurants and bars, making it an active spot day and night. Casual chains like Panera are just as popular as local spots like John Martin’s Irish Pub & Restaurant. Upscale Ecuadoran cuisine is a staple at La Pata Gorda, while Mediterranean fare is the highlight at Motek. The options extend south along Ponce de Leon Boulevard, making room for high-end restaurants such as Bulla Gastrobar and Fogo de Chão Brazilian Steakhouse. While the dining options are seemingly endless, Jochem says parking is a different story. “There used to be diagonal parking along [Miracle Mile], but when they repaved, they took those away and added more sidewalks.” But she adds that many restaurants offer valet service. Downtown Coral Gables also includes big box stores like Target, Marshalls, Burlington and a Winn-Dixie grocery store.

Events on Miracle Mile
Coral Gables hosts events throughout the year, including annual favorites like spring’s Carnaval on the Mile. This local extension of the ever-popular Carnaval Miami includes live music, art and food vendors on Miracle Mile. The two-day event culminates with the Calle Ocho Music Festival, a street party honoring the area’s Hispanic and Cuban heritage. More frequent events include Viernes Culturales, or Cultural Fridays, a street fair on the third Friday of every month on Calle Ocho. The first Friday of each month brings Coral Gables Gallery Night, and Jochem says many residents take advantage of the city’s free trolley to reach downtown galleries and museums. And on Saturdays in winter, locals meet at Merrick Park for the city’s farmers market.
Luxury condos at 1300 Ponce
Many of the neighborhood’s spacious condo complexes include private amenities such as pools, tennis courts and off-street parking. The architecture of these midrise and high-rise buildings can range from Spanish Revival to Art Deco, creating an eclectic streetscape. Townhouses are less common here, and many single-family homes have been turned into duplexes to accommodate the neighborhood’s dense rental market — renters account for more than 80% of current residents. However, buyers still have options, including two-bedroom condos that range from $500,000 to nearly $1 million. While most units stay under $800,000, those in luxury buildings such as Villa Adria, Gables Tower and 1300 Ponce are often more expensive. One-bedroom units can range from $200,000 to $400,000.

Phillips Park is getting an upgrade
Phillips Park, one of the city’s most popular, includes a shaded playground and tennis and basketball courts. These amenities are expected to grow in the coming years as the city begins a major renovation project approved by the community in the summer of 2024. “There’s going to be pickleball courts and splash pads, and they’re redoing the field,” Jochem says. Another local favorite is Salvadore Park, renovated in 2023 with an accessible playground, wheelchair-friendly paths and a large picnic shelter. It’s also beloved for its spacious tennis center. Jochem says the improvements are a hit. “The place is jammed since they put those zip lines in for the kids. That’s also where they built the dog park.”
Less than a mile away is the Venetian Pool, a public swimming hole built within a former 1920s casino. This historic, spring-fed oasis often hosts end-of-season events like Paws in the Pool, during which owners can bring their dogs for a swim. Across the parking lot, Lamar Louise Curry Park honors a former garden club member with landscaped sitting areas shaded by tropical foliage. Residents can join the Coral Gables Country Club or golf at the nearby 9-hole Grenada Golf Course. The Biltmore Hotel offers an annual day pass and is another popular recreation spot with a tennis center, pool and golf course.
