Highland Lakes is an upscale suburban Miami community near Aventura

Highland Lakes in the northern Miami suburbs is the type of neighborhood that’s hard to forget and even harder to let go of. The community is anchored by long-time residents who enjoy the security and stability of a guard-gated community that features high-value homes in proximity to an array of amenities, from parks to schools to the largest mall in Florida. Highland Lakes is also home to Chabad Chayil, a Jewish education and community center currently under construction.

Homeowners tend to put down roots in Highland Lakes

“Many of the new buyers grew up here and are coming back to raise their families,” says Celia Mussman, a Realtor with One Sotheby’s International who raised her family in the neighborhood. “People who live here live here a long time. I just sold two houses. One seller had lived here for more than 25 years and the other for 45 years. Even people who sell in the neighborhood usually stay in the area. They don’t want to move away from everything they’ve had.” Non-HOA midcentury homes on spacious lots are prominent along walkable streets filled with palm trees and other native greenery. Traditional ranch-style designs are common. Spanish Mediterranean is a common motif. Renovations often feature more modern features such as sleek facades and muted colors. Many of the front yards have custom landscaping that adds curb appeal. Most homes offer in-ground pools. A select few feature direct access to the water. Prices range from around $900,000 for mid-sized homes to as much as $3 million for estate-style homes that grace the shores of the neighborhood’s small, man-made lake. Homes maintain their value because of their relative scarcity in an otherwise fast-growing area. As neighboring Aventura continues to build condos and townhouses for its increasing population, Highland Lakes offers a destination for those seeking a long-term commitment. “We decided to stay in our home because we’re not condo dwellers,” says Judith Tamaroff, a longtime resident who specializes in neighborhood sales for Berkshire Hathaway’s EWM Realty. Some homes on the west side of the neighborhood are close to Interstate 95, but a sound wall negates traffic noise. While the neighborhood is a few miles inland, it still faces a major risk of flooding. Wind damage also is a significant risk, especially during hurricane season. Insurance rates will reflect these realities.

Amenities, community events at Highland Oaks Park

“We have a beautiful park that has tennis, pickleball, a soccer field and a baseball field,” says Mona Silber Heisler of Beachfront Realty, Inc., who lives in Highland Lakes. “We have a lot going on.” In addition to its athletic amenities, Highland Oaks Park features a lake that is circled by a popular walking path with access to children’s playscapes. The park hosts Food Truck Thursdays, a signature community event that features DJ music and kids’ entertainment. Nearby Ives Estates Park offers additional athletic amenities. Beachgoers and other outdoors enthusiasts can take advantage of the recreational diversity along the Atlantic oceanfront, which is less than 5 miles away.

Attractive school options and a neighborhood Jewish center

The school system is a major draw for the neighborhood, which is served by Miami-Dade County Public Schools, a highly rated district. Virginia A. Boone-Highland Oaks Elementary School is a top-rated option just outside of the neighborhood, next to Highland Oaks Middle School. Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School is also nearby. The middle and high schools are highly rated. The high school features a STAR Academy focused on the visual and performing arts and offers a Career and Technical Education program. The district allows students to apply for transfers under the state’s Open Enrollment program. Chabad Chayil will encompass five floors and nearly 38,000-square feet. Classrooms, libraries and a rooftop park are among the planned amenities. Nearby Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus offers religious schooling and an after-school program.

Stores, restaurants, movies and art at Aventura Mall

Aventura Mall is less than 2 miles away. “Highland Lakes is not part of Aventura per se, but it’s considered part of it,” Mussman says. “Aventura is known for being close to everything, and there’s nothing that isn’t available at the mall. It’s a destination.” The mall features an array of shopping, dining and entertainment options that include: Brand names such as Macy’s, Apple, Nordstrom and Cartier Restaurants such as Pubbelly Sushi, Motek, Serafina and Bella Luna A modern movieplex with 24 screens and more than 4,000 seats A Publix for groceries and other daily essentials More than two dozen public art installations

Appealing access to the interstate, public transportation

“We’re centrally located, with easy access to I-95,” Heisler says. “We’re between two airports – in Fort Lauderdale and Miami. We’re 10 minutes to the beaches.” Buses, trains, shuttles and the regional Brightline train run out of Nearby Aventura Station, which will also be the northern terminus for a commuter rail line connecting the area to the heart of Miami. The new service, dubbed the Northeast Corridor, will share tracks with Brightline.
