Highland Lakes

Mostly single-family homes in Highland Lakes
Along walkable streets filled with palm trees and other native greenery is a collection of midcentury homes on spacious lots. Traditional ranch-style designs are prominent. Spanish Mediterranean is a common motif. Renovations often feature more modern features such as sleek facades and muted colors. Many of the front yards have custom landscaping that adds curb appeal. Most homes offer in-ground pools. A select few feature direct access to the water. Prices range from around $900,000 for mid-sized homes to more than $2 million for larger homes that grace the shores of the neighborhood’s small man-made lake. Homes maintain their value because of their relative scarcity in an otherwise fast-growing area. As neighboring Aventura continues to build condos and townhouses for its increasing population, Highland Lakes offers a home for those seeking a long-term commitment. “We decided to stay in our home because we’re not condo dwellers,” says Judy Tamaroff, a longtime resident who specializes in neighborhood sales for Berkshire Hathaway’s EWM Realty. Tamaroff adds that HOA fees are only $30 a year and there is no maintenance fee. Some homes on the west side of the neighborhood are close to Interstate 95, but a sound wall negates traffic noise. While the neighborhood is a few miles inland, it still faces a major risk of flooding. Wind damage also is a significant risk, especially during hurricane season. Insurance rates will reflect these realities.Highland Oaks Park hosts Food Truck Thursdays
The neighborhood is conveniently surrounded by a pair of parks. Highland Oaks Park offers a wooded setting anchored by a lake that is circled by a popular walking path. Shaded playscapes are located along the path. Tennis courts and a soccer field are highlights of the available athletic amenities. The park also is the site of Food Truck Thursdays, which features DJ Music and bounce houses. Youth compete in baseball, football, soccer and tennis at Ives Estates Park. The buzzy beaches of the Atlantic oceanfront are less than 5 miles away.Virginia A. Boone Highland Oaks School and Highland Oaks Middle School are nearby
Miami-Dade County Public Schools, rated B-plus by Niche, serves neighborhood students. Virginia A. Boone Highland Oaks School and Highland Oaks Middle School, both rated B-plus by Niche, are located next to one another just outside the neighborhood. Older students can attend Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High, a B-plus-rated school that features a STAR Academy focused on the visual and performing arts and offers a Career and Technical Education program. Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus is located adjacent to Highland Oaks Park. The synagogue’s Scheck Family Religious School offers an after-school program for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. Tamaroff says a new Chabad with seven floors and a school is planned for a nearby location.Aventura Mall is a neighborhood destination
Aventura Mall is less than 2 miles away. “Highland Lakes is not part of Aventura per se, but it’s considered part of it,” Mussman says. “Aventura is known for being close to everything, and there’s nothing that isn’t available at the mall. It’s a destination.” The mall features dozens of luxury shopping options, including brand names such as Macy’s, Apple, Nordstrom and Cartier. It also includes a movie theater, a Publix and an array of dining options. Pubbelly Sushi is a fusion of Puerto Rican flavors and Japanese cuisine. Motek elevates traditional Mediterranean dishes. Serafina and Bella Luna are classic upscale Italian restaurants.
New commuter rail line connects neighborhood to downtown Miami
HCA Florida Aventura Hospital is within 2 miles of the neighborhood. “The hospital is growing by leaps and bounds,” Tamaroff says. “They’re buying up all the land, and assisted living facilities are being built nearby.” The newest addition to the nearby amenities is the commuter rail line that connects the area to Miami. Aventura Station is just 2 miles away. “What that has brought to the neighborhood are professionals who work downtown but want to live here,” Mussman says. Car travel throughout South Florida is made easy by Interstate 95, which forms the western edge of the neighborhood. I-95 connects directly to other major cities, including Hollywood to the north and Miami to the south. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport is less than 10 miles away.
