Amanda-Oneida
1920s-era bungalows, midcentury architecture and investment properties
Although there are pockets of 1920s-era bungalows, the majority of homes in Amanda-Oneida were built in the years directly following World War I and throughout the 1950s. Architectural styles reflect the time period, and prospective buyers will find compact, ranch-style houses ranging from around $100,000 to $200,000, a fraction of the national median. There are also a few investment properties for less than $100,000. Lot sizes average around a quarter acre, and detached garages are shaded by trees.A namesake elementary school is within walking distance
The neighborhood derives its name in part from Amanda Elementary School, which earns a C grade from Niche. It’s within walking distance for many students. Kids go on to attend Highview 6th Grade Center and Middletown Middle, both of which have C-minus grades, before graduating from Middletown High, which also has a C. There are more educational opportunities open to the public at the MidPointe Library. “We offer programming for all ages and stages,” says the library’s communications director, Cari Hillman, adding that she’s come to recognize many of the same faces at events. “There’s something for everyone…We also visit pretty much every preschool in our service area to bring library programming to little ones.”A Salvation Army park and rec center at the center of Amanda-Oneida
Salvation Army Damon Park, better known locally as Damon Park, spans 6 acres at the center of Amanda-Oneida. Outdoor amenities include a basketball court and playground, and the Salvation Army also operates a rec center on the grounds. Inside, residents will find kitchen space, a classroom and a small gymnasium. Just outside the neighborhood, Robert Sonny Hill Jr. Community Center has garden plots available for rent. The splash pad at Douglas Park is a short walk away.Bars and household necessities along Oxford State Road
Most of the neighborhood’s shopping and dining is concentrated along Oxford State Road, which is lined with a mix of bars, laundromats and stores like Dollar General for household necessities. The City Tavern stays open into the early hours of the morning, and there are pool tables and live music. Residents can drive to the Kroger off Oxford State Road for groceries, and there are several fast food options, including McDonald’s and Gold Star on South Main Street.Major thoroughfares, nearby employment and medical care
Amanda-Oneida is about 3 miles from downtown Middletown along Verity Parkway. Interstate 75 connects the neighborhood to larger cities in less than an hour. Cincinnati is around 35 miles south, and Dayton is a little over 25 miles north. Although both offer a range of employment opportunities, it’s more common for residents to work closer to home. “The steel industry is still big in Middletown,” says Steve Owens of Plum Tree Realty, explaining that some things in the rustbelt town have remained more or less the same over the last hundred years, even after the departure of AK Steel. Atrium Medical Center is the closest hospital — it’s also another major employer. Both Dayton and Cincinnati have international airports, although Cincinnati’s is larger, offering direct flights to more than 50 destinations.
