Rural Midway North is between two small cities and major roads

Midway North in Hidalgo County sits amid the small Rio Grande Valley cities of Weslaco and Donna . It's a rural and residential area between Mile 10 Road on the north and Interstate 2 on the south. Counted as a census-designated place starting in 2000, Midway North now has a population of about 3,500, according to U.S. Census estimates. Mailing addresses list Weslaco.

Colonias reminiscent of Mexican neighborhoods are in the area

Jennifer Martinez, the broker/owner of Mariposa Realty RGV Inc., says the area has some characteristics of colonias, which are unincorporated border communities. "In some of them, you're going to literally feel like you've driven across into Mexico," Martinez says. Midway North is about 11 miles from the Donna-Río Bravo International Bridge, which links to Mexico across the Rio Grande.

Rustic residential streets contrast with suburban-style subdivisions

The residential streets with a colonia-style vibe typically lack sidewalks, construction materials include concrete, and there's variation in lot configurations and styles of fencing. "You have a lot of people that have built homes from scratch," Martinez says, noting that she sold one in the area that belonged to a family that had migrated from Mexico. "The grandparents had actually built the house, and the first and second generations were raised there. That's actually pretty common. It's definitely an area for multigenerational families."
In contrast, other parts of Midway North have new subdivisions with sidewalks, cul-de-sacs and evenly spaced lots. These developments have contemporary homes dating from the 2000s to the 2020s. Homes of about 1,400 to 2,000 square feet are common. Prices range from about $210,000 to $310,000. Though rarely on the market, older, smaller homes have been priced lower; a spacious luxury home can list for much more. A housing option for seniors, Avani Legacy Sienna Palms, is a gated apartment community that opened in 2022. Amenities at the complex include pools, a fitness center and monthly events for residents.

Recreation in subdivisions, a nearby nature center and area events

Although Midway North doesn't have municipal community parks, individual subdivisions may have playgrounds and other recreational amenities. The Valley Nature Center, a 6-acre bird and butterfly habitat with trails and diverse plant species, is about 4 miles to the southeast. The center hosts the Spring Chirp Birding Festival over three days in April. The site of the Donna Sports Memorial Complex, which broke ground in September 2025, is a few miles from Midway North.
Other events in the area include Evenings at the Square, a monthly event in Donna from September to February, featuring entertainment, vendors and food. In March, two big events bring crowds: Weslaco puts on the Texas Onion Festival, and Mercedes has the Rio Grande Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Weslaco or Donna public schools and school choice options

Most of the community is zoned to the Weslaco Independent School District, which earns a B grade from Niche. Students may attend Cleckler-Heald Elementary School or Rodolfo "Rudy" Silva, Jr. Elementary School, followed by Beatriz G. Garza Middle School and Weslaco High School. The area west of North Midway Road is zoned to the Donna Independent School District, which earns a C-plus grade from Niche. Students may attend Donna ISD schools like Eloy Garza Salazar Elementary, W. A. Todd Middle School and Donna High School.
Both districts offer school choice through open enrollment, with options including Early College High School programs in collaboration with South Texas College. IDEA Weslaco tuition-free charter schools are another possibility; two locations cover all grade levels. For magnet schools, the South Texas Independent School District serves Hidalgo and other counties in the valley.

Establishments within a drive of about 2 miles are Victorino's Mexican Restaurant and The Soup Doctors. Weslaco and Donna have other restaurants and shops, including national-brand stores and supermarkets.

Highways, medical facilities and the closest international airport

Most people in Midway North drive, and there's convenient access to thoroughfares: I-2 and U.S. Route 83 are to the south. Valley Baptist Micro Hospital – Weslaco and South Texas Health System ER Weslaco are within several miles of Midway North. McAllen International Airport has passenger service on major airlines and is about 17 miles away.

Environmental risks and concerns that may affect Midway North
