Best little town by a dam site
Just 12 miles away from the heart of Bangor, along the Penobscot River, sits the town of Milford. Forests and hills primarily cover the less than 50 square mile area, but it also has a tight-knit community at its core along the river. The small area’s slogan is “Best little town by a dam site,” which references the historic Milford Dam, which helped put the city on the map, along with the number of sawmills that used to line the river. In the place of the sawmills are a number of split-level and ranch-style homes just a quick walk away from recreation options on the water and dining options in neighboring Old Town, which lies just across the river. “It is an older bedroom community, but the area has a lot of traffic running through it and around it, says Sarah Commeau, the treasurer of Milford who has served the community for over eight years. “There are always a lot of people out and about.”

A range of yard sizes and home styles
Housing in Milford comes in several shapes and sizes. Options range from manufactured homes to Colonial Revivals, ranch style and split-level built in the early to mid-1900s. Lawns also vary, from some offering the views of the water to others having vast expanses of forests beyond the back porch. Lots also have plenty of space to allow for garages or driveways. Home prices commonly range from around $50,000 to $350,000.

U.S. Route 2 and walkable streets
U.S. Route 2, also known as Main Road, is a main thoroughfare for Milford and several cities and towns that line the Penobscot River. The road also branches off in two directions, helping connect both sides of the river to Bangor. For day-to-day travel, Milford is known as a very walkable place, with Commeau saying there are often people in the neighborhood walking their dogs or jogging, partially thanks to the number of sidewalks in town and the serene subdivisions and residential streets. Bangor International Airport is 15 miles to the south, and the Helen Hunt Health Center is a mile away in Old Town.

Commeau says Pepper’s Landing is where people can grab classic Maine-style seafood on the patio. Patrons can find date night options at KANÙ, well-known for its rooftop dining, as they chat around artificial firepits. Milford Country Road Market offers daily necessities, and locals can also head two miles west to the local Hannaford for groceries.

Recreation along the river or in the forest
Despite the town’s small size, there are many places to explore on the weekends, just a short walk or drive from home. The Milford Playground is closest to home, offering a small basketball court and playset less than a block from many local homes. Binette Park is in neighboring Old Town and has a playset and a splash pad with views of the Penobscot River. This park is also popular for numerous events throughout the year. Towards the eastern end of the town, Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is a place for hikers and nature enthusiasts. It has the second largest peat bog in Maine, making a lush and varied park that is home to 15 different species listed as endangered or threatened by the State of Maine. “It is just a beautiful area,” Commeau says, “there are tons of walking trails all around.”
