Mililani Mauka

Located in Honolulu County

The picture of suburban living in central Oahu

Mililani Mauka is widely regarded as one of the nicest communities in central Oahu. It's the luxurious east side of the larger Mililani development, a master-planned community designed for ultimate convenience just 20 miles north of Honolulu. "Everybody wants to live in Mililani Mauka," says Realtor Marilou Moralez with eXp Realty, who lived in the community for many years. "It's one of the most beautiful developments on Oahu," says Moralez. "And you don't need to go anywhere because you've got shopping right there, and Costco is basically your neighbor." Stores, restaurants, local businesses and the Sunday farmers market are all minutes away in Mililani Town Center, the heart of the development across Interstate H-2. The residential amenities are complete with one of Hawaii's best — if not the best — school pipelines. "The schools are awesome in Mililani, and the schools in Mililani Mauka are even better," says Moralez. This high-end suburban lifestyle with complementary shopping and schools that Mililani Mauka offers might be common in the continental states, but on Oahu, it's something to be sought after.

Mililani's suburban feel is a refreshing change of pace from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu.

Larger tract homes

The community's desirability comes with a median single-family home price of $1.2 million. "It's also more expensive because it's newer than the rest of Mililani," says Moralez. "Pretty much every single-family home will be over a million." While the bulk of Mililani was developed in the 1960s, Mililani Mauka's winding residential streets were built in the 2000s. Homes typically have three to four bedrooms and bear simplistic architectural details that pay homage to traditional Hawaiian cottages despite their larger size. Most condos and townhouses start around $450,000. There are more spacious single-family options in gated areas that can cost over $2 million.

Although Mililani is a well-established neighborhood, newer developments with energy-efficient features are not uncommon.

This outdoor mall has grocery stores, pharmacies, smaller local shops, a selection of casual eateries and a few sit-down restaurants. The Mililani Farmers Market sets up across the street from the mall every Sunday morning. The Mililani Shopping Center is the development's second commercial plaza, offering more shopping and dining up the road from the town center. Costco is only 4 miles down the Interstate, and the Waikele Premium Outlets are 7 miles away.

Concerns after the Mililani Mauka Fire

Wildfires have been a concern in Oahu since the Mililani Mauka Fire in the fall of 2023. The fire didn't damage the community, but it burned over 1,600 acres of rainforest in the Mililani Mauka-Launani Valley to the east. With the potential danger of fires, residents should have an established evacuation plan and follow any local safety precautions. Station 41 of the Honolulu Fire Department responds to the community's fire threats. The Honolulu Police Department-Wahiawa Substation handles crime in the area. Specific crime statistics for the Mililani area aren't available.
