Homes vary in size and style, from manufactured homes in the resident-owned Milton Community mobile home cooperative, to turn-of-the-century New England farmhouses and brand-new constructions in the Clearview subdivision. Residences sometimes have spacious yards and detached garages with mature trees and views of the surrounding landscape. Others are on busy streets near the town center, making running errands convenient. A selection of townhouses, duplexes and rental investment properties are also for sale. On the low end, manufactured homes can cost between $65,000 and $150,000. Farmhouse-style residences and larger split-levels dating back to the early-to-mid 1900s may be priced between $300,000 and $450,000. New constructions built in the early 2000s can cost between $550,000 and $850,000 – those homes on the higher end are often located in the Clearview subdivision.

Students living in Milton will often attend public schools within the Milton School District. Fishing and hiking along the Lamoille River
Milton’s rural landscape means plenty of opportunities to get outside in both snow and sun. Milton stretches to Lake Champlain, a popular spot for people to visit in the summertime. “One of the best parts of Milton, in my opinion, is Sandbar State Park. It’s awesome for kayaking, playing horseshoes and there are occasional ice cream trucks by the beach,” Scowcroft says. “The area is pretty rural and being outdoors is a big draw here.” The Lamoille River Walk is a scenic hike along the river, featuring boardwalks, historical markers and opportunities for bird watching, picnicking or taking photos of the landscape. Folks can head up to River Street Park and sit by the water after grabbing a snack at Huddy’s, known for its bagels, coffee and sandwiches. The park has picnic tables and benches, old-fashioned streetlamps and access to the Lower Lamoille River outlet for fishing but not swimming. Bombardier Park West is home to the Milton Outdoor Performance Center, which hosts concerts and community events.

Locally owned shops and restaurants on Route 7
Nearly every shop and restaurant in Milton can be found on Route 7, which turns into River Street. Though this part of town has several chains like Dunkin’ and McDonald’s, some locally owned spots are worth checking out. Longtime favorite Zachary’s Pizza has a wide Italian and American comfort food menu. “Zachary’s and the Milton Diner have been local staples for quite some time,” Scowcroft says. Duke's Creemees has a small-town atmosphere with sundaes, shakes and even pup cup treats for dogs. On the north side of town, Painted Lady Cafe has outdoor patio seating and serves small plates like quiche and salads, while the Arrowhead Lodge prides itself on serving locally sourced craft beer, wine and cider. The Arrowhead is also a popular spot for live music and local events. There is also a Hannaford, O’Reilly Auto Parts and a Family Dollar on Route 7.

Small-town community events and celebrations
Milton hosts several community events at the local library and Milton Outdoor Performance Center at Bombardier Park West. Their Science in the Summer program teaches students when school is out of session and focuses on topics like the water cycle, constellations and gravity. The library also hosts Mahjong games and a bridge club. The Milton Outdoor Performance Center bandshell hosts the Milton Music in the Park event, where locals can settle in on picnic blankets and chairs and listen to the area’s summer concert series. For the 4th of July, the area hosts a parade through the town’s streets and a fireworks show at Bombardier Park West. On Tuesday evenings from June through September, the Milton Farmers Market can be found outside the Milton Public Library and fire department.

Green Mountain Transit buses and access to Route 7
There are several Green Mountain Transit bus stops in town along Route 7. Folks can take Route 7 all the way north, almost to the Canadian border, or use it to drive down to Chimney Corner. They can either use the Colchester Park and Ride bus station to take a Green Mountain Transit bus or hop on Interstate 89 to drive about 11 miles south to Burlington. Though residents may choose to walk or bike around the village, most drive to their chosen destination.
