Arlington Gardens is a quiet spot with deep community roots
A lifelong Milwaukee resident, realtor Beth Jaworski of Shorewest Realtors says her time at Lindsay Park — a green space adjacent to the Arlington Gardens neighborhood — was core to her childhood. “My earliest memories are of going to the wading pool when I was really young,” says Jaworski, who grew up a block from the park. “All the way through high school, we’d hang out on the swing set, talking, going as high as we could before flying off.” Life in Arlington Gardens, which Jaworski describes as “a quiet little neighborhood,” is ripe for that kind of memory-making.
Sidewalk-lined streets feature mostly single-family homes
Arlington Gardens is an almost entirely residential section of Milwaukee’s Northwest Side, with a few businesses along Capitol Drive and Appleton Avenue. Ranch-style homes from the mid-20th century fill much of its acreage, flanking winding, sidewalk-lined streets and cul-de-sacs. Other popular 20th-century styles — namely Tudors, bungalows, Colonials and Cape Cods — appear occasionally, alongside several duplexes. Home prices rarely fall outside the mid-to-high $100,000s or low $200,000s. For instance, a $230,000 price tag could get you a three-bedroom rambler with 1,700-plus square feet and a detached, two-car garage.
A large city park with room for play, sports and quiet moments
Most residents are within a 15-minute walk of Lindsay Park, which covers 13 acres across 84th Street to the west. As in Jaworski’s early years, locals can let their little ones loose at the wading pool on a summer afternoon or have heart-to-hearts on the swings. Conversely, in recent years, the park began hosting a recently emerging Milwaukee sport: cricket. Visit on the right day, and you can catch an exciting showing from the Milwaukee Panthers Cricket Club, part of the city’s Regal T20 Cricket League. Other athletes can play pickup baseball on Lindsay Park’s practice diamond while more laid-back visitors stroll along the path encircling the park.
Nearby public and private schools have specialized programs
The only school in Arlington Gardens is Northwest Lutheran — part of LUMIN Schools — offering private education for kindergarten through eighth grade. Milwaukee Public Schools operates several locations within blocks of the neighborhood. Grantosa Drive School accommodates roughly 550 kindergarten through eighth grade students across Hampton Avenue to the north. East across Appleton Avenue, Craig Montessori School offers an alternative for the same grade levels and has a C-minus from Niche. Another C-minus school, Milwaukee Marshall High School, enrolls over 1,200 teens less than a mile east. Marshall students can explore various post-grad pathways via its STEAM-focused Career and Technical Education Program and dual-enrollment courses in graphic design, audiovisual technology and other subjects.
Casual restaurants serve homestyle meals and margaritas
Along with national franchises like Dunkin’ and Taco Bell, a couple of Milwaukee- and Wisconsin-based chain restaurants have locations in Arlington Gardens. Rocky Rococo Pizza and Pasta serves pan-style pies and Italian standards in a casual, sit-where-you-want setting. Big Sharks Fish & Chicken offers similar vibes in which to enjoy fried chicken and fish paired with homestyle sides, from hush puppies to jalapeno poppers. Across the street, Burrito Bueno appeases appetites with Mexican classics while its stocked bar keeps the margaritas flowing.
A short drive or bus ride from stores and downtown Milwaukee
Locals are just minutes from grocery stops like Aldi, Pick ‘n Save and Hmong Town. Midtown Center, a shopping center with clothiers, a furniture store and other retailers, is less than five minutes down Capitol Drive. According to Jaworski, the conveniences don’t stop there. “You’re about 10 minutes from Mayfair Mall and 15 minutes from downtown Milwaukee,” she says.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
