The median home value in Avenues West is about $117,500, as opposed to $135,600 for Milwaukee. Assessors value three-bedroom late 19th-century homes between $60,000 and $140,000. Two-bedroom craftsman-style homes built in the early 20th century are valued between $85,000 and $190,000. Assessors value four-bedroom Queen Anne-style homes between $145,000 and $250,000. “Wisconsin Avenue used to be called Grand Avenue, and it was one of the poshest areas in Milwaukee until the 30s and 40s,” Argeropoulos says. “There are still some remnants of the most fantastic homes that once graced Milwaukee.”

Locals play rugby and basketball at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on the northeast corner of the community. People travel 2 ½ miles southwest to watch the Milwaukee Brewers play at the American Family Field. They drive 1 ½ miles east to the Fiserv Forum to watch the Milwaukee Bucks play. The Marquette Golden Eagles also play there. The Rave on Wisconsin Avenue is a stone 1920s musical venue that hosts famous groups like the Veronicas and the Plain White T’s. “There’s been a lot of new investment in Avenues West that has given us venues like The Rave,” Argeropoulos says. Marquette University’s women’s volleyball and basketball teams play the Al McGuire Center, a 3,700-seat arena. Residents also visit Pabst Mansion, a Flemish Renaissance-style mansion built in the 1890s for Captain Frederick Pabst, founder of the Pabst Brewing Company. People travel 1 ½ miles south to play table games and slots at the Potawatomi Casino Hotel.Getting around the area
Locals seek healthcare at Aurora Sinai Medical Center on the northeast corner of the community. People travel 78 miles west to Madison and 101 miles south to Chicago on Interstate 94. Interstate 43 marks the eastern edge of the community. Interstate 94 is to the southern edge of the community. Milwaukee County Transit operates bus stops along West Wisconsin Avenue, West Highland Boulevard and West Wells Street. On West State Street, Five O’Clock Steakhouse serves surf and turf and craft beer. On North 27th Street, Daddy’s Soul Food & Grille serves classic American fare. A local favorite, Miss Katie’s Diner is a 1950s-style diner popular for its omelets and BBQ sandwiches. There are fast-food restaurants like McDonald’s and Taco Bell on West Wisconsin Avenue. People buy their own cooking ingredients at Milwaukee Foods Grocery & Deli and Mo’s Food Market. The latter specialize in Asian cooking ingredients. The historic Ambassador Hotel on Wisconsin Avenue offers roaring 20s-style dining. Residents enjoy fine dining options at the Fitz and have cocktails at the Gin Rickey.
