Borchert Field was once home to Milwaukee’s minor league team
The name Borchert Field once referred to the home stadium for the Milwaukee Brewers, which stood on the city’s Northwest Side until it was demolished to make way for Interstate 43. Today, it’s the name of a neighborhood that’s home to over 3,700 people just a couple blocks from the ballfield’s former site. Borchert Field is a mainly residential set of gridded blocks, though its western section comprises a large cemetery. Some of the neighborhood’s sidewalk-lined streets are well-shaded thanks to dense tree cover, making for a pleasant walk around the block even on hotter days.
Borchert Field is known for it's baseball history, having once been the home of the Milwaukee Brewers, who played there from 1888 to 1953.

LaFollette School enrolls fewer than 200 students and has an above-average rating from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (WDPI). North Division High School operates a few blocks south and has a similarly small student body, with under 400 kids enrolled. Established in 1906, it’s among the oldest Milwaukee Public Schools and is home to a large drumline that regularly performs at parades and events in and outside Wisconsin. Meanwhile, Rufus King International High School is a five-minute drive north of Borchert Field and is among Milwaukee’s most acclaimed public schools, as noted by Niche, U.S. News & World Report and others.

A renovated park and community gardens support outdoor activity
Several community gardens have sprouted up in Borchert Field recently, including We Got This Community Garden, which features over a dozen raised beds of locally grown produce. Neighborhood residents of all ages gather and depart from here every Saturday to lead a community cleanup effort. Just south of the neighborhood, Columbia Playfield is a public park where visitors of all ages can shoot hoops, cool off in the splash pad or monkey around on the playground. In 2018, Milwaukee Recreation chose Columbia Park as the first of many city green spaces to undergo a significant renovation, concluding less than a year later.

Soul food, sports bars and jazz cafés around the neighborhood
Circle Borchert Field and you’ll pass several easygoing, locally owned eateries serving a variety of cuisines. Among these is Bungalow Restaurant, a soul food joint with a diner-like ambiance. Across the street is The 4th Quarter Sports Bar & Grill, which proudly displays Packers pride inside and out (the building is painted green and yellow). And if you venture just east across the interstate, you’ll find Sam’s Place Jazz Café, where the mornings are for piping-hot breakfast and coffee, and the evenings are for live jazz.
