A neighborhood of just over 2,000 on Milwaukee’s Northwest Side, Calumet Farms deftly balances a pastoral landscape with suburban-style living, plus quick access to a public golf course and a major freeway.

True to its name, Calumet Farms includes many sizeable chunks of undeveloped farmland interspersed with dynamic residential areas. The southwest section of the neighborhood is densely wooded, with homes from the mid-to-late 20th century sitting on set-back, tree-enveloped lots. More open-aired parts of the neighborhood feature midcentury ranch-style and split-level houses, while the Oak Hill subdivision contains varied designs from 21st century Craftsman to Victorian revival. A couple of condo developments from the 1980s and ‘90s are in the northern section, offering one- and two-bedroom units with garages. Home prices vary considerably: You could find a roughly 800-square-foot condo for less than $100,000 or a 2008-built Colonial with 3,000-plus square feet in the low $500,000s.

While much of the green space in Calumet Farms isn’t publicly accessible, residents are just a few minutes from Dretzka Park. This 326-acre county park is best known for its 18-hole golf course, the second-longest public course in Milwaukee County. “The course was built in 1964, so it’s an older, tree-lined golf course, but it’s always in great condition,” says Head Golf Pro Dave Labinski. “And we have a driving range, so people can just come out and hit balls as well.” The park also features a 27-hole disc golf course, a sand volleyball pit and a connection to the Oak Leaf Trail. After wrapping up a game, you can enjoy a sandwich, a drink and a game of pool at the clubhouse bar and grill, which was extensively remodeled in 2014.

If you need a good breakfast to help you fuel up before you tee off, check out Park Place Café at the southwest corner of Calumet Farms. In its few years of operation, this cozy diner has become a local favorite for breakfast, lunch and brunch, winning customers with dishes like the chicken tender skillet and eggs benedict. Head a few minutes north of the neighborhood on 107th Street, and you’ll hit a cluster of locally owned restaurants and bars. Among these is El Tenampa Mexican Grill & Cantina, where you can dig into classic Mexican fare while sipping a colorful frozen margarita.

Even if you don’t play golf, athletes in the neighborhood can visit the many sports fields surrounding Vincent High School of Agricultural Sciences, from baseball diamonds to tennis courts. Within the walls of Vincent High, ninth through 12th graders can engage in a multifaceted agriculture program that includes a greenhouse, an aquaponics lab and animal facilities. Some students have even raised chickens and sold their eggs to the public, simultaneously learning animal sciences and entrepreneurship. The school is conveniently within walking distance for many residents, while Goodrich Elementary and Morse Middle School for the Gifted and Talented are a few minutes by car. Meanwhile, the private New Testament Christian Academy also accommodates kindergarten through eighth grade in the neighborhood and has an impressive four-star rating from the state education department.

Residents need only head a few blocks west of Calumet Farms to run errands. Aldi, Woodman’s Food Market and Sam’s Club all have locations down Bradley Road, while Interstate 41 sits across the street and will get you to downtown Milwaukee in just over 20 minutes.
