Bienvenida a Clarke Square
Directly south of the Menomonee Valley is Clarke Square, one of Milwaukee's oldest and densest neighborhoods. The neighborhood has historically housed different immigrant populations and today is an epicenter for Latin American culture in Milwaukee. Cultural influences can be seen along Cesar E. Chavez Drive — named for the famous activist — which overflows with artworks, memorials and businesses displaying Latin American pride. Though a mere 45 or so square blocks, this area is home to roughly 8,000 Milwaukeeans, giving it a bustling energy without being in the center of downtown. The neighborhood also borders the iconic Mitchell Park Domes, a nature conservatory that's one of Milwaukee's symbols.
Colorful murals can be found throughout the neighborhood of Clarke Square.

Community support at Journey House
Clarke Square is served by a local non-profit, Journey House, which runs a community center located within the neighborhood. “Our mission since we’ve been founded is to provide the community with quality services and resources,” says Cherise Myers, the Journey House Director of Community Partnerships. Journey House offers adult education courses, youth programming and community events. It sets up entry-level training to make jobs in healthcare, finance or construction more accessible, and it makes sure every kid who comes to the holiday celebration leaves with a gift-wrapped toy. One of Journey House’s proudest features is a football field donated by the NFL’s Green Bay Packers — the only donated football field to still carry its NFL logo. “In order to get access to these resources, no one should have to pay,” Myers says. “So Journey House is there to provide a fabric of support that weaves throughout the community.”

Bilingual public schools
H. W. Longfellow School is the second-oldest Milwaukee Public Schools facility, having sat at the center of the neighborhood since 1886. The school receives a C-minus rating from Niche and is within walking distance for many kindergarten through eighth graders. Longfellow has a bilingual program for learning in both Spanish and English and partners with Journey House to provide after-school programming. "Journey House steps in to provide academic assistance or recreational opportunities that the kids might not get otherwise," Myers explains. Students can continue to learn bilingually at South Division High School, which gets a C rating. There are several private, faith-based options nearby as well, including Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Milwaukee, which has a work-study program and a 100% college acceptance rate.

Mitchell Park Domes right next door
All Clarke Square residents are within walking distance of Mitchell Park, a roughly 60-acre expanse featuring walking trails, a scenic pond, a tot lot and, of course, the Mitchell Park Domes. Locals enjoy the warm, green air of these three semispherical greenhouses year-round, but it's an especially nice getaway during the cold Wisconsin winters. Each represents a different botanical motif, with a rotating schedule of exhibitions.

Homes with classic Milwaukee character
Most homes in Clarke Square were built during its most substantial growth period at the turn of the 20th century. These unique properties include plenty of classic, Milwaukee-style bungalows with stone-based pillars, older Craftsman homes and some Queen Anne structures. Many homes are split into duplexes, and around 75% of the neighborhood are renters. But for those looking to buy, homes start around $100,000 and get up to $200,000 for renovated properties. For being so close to downtown and the heavily industrial Menomonee Valley, the neighborhood is quite lush. Dense rows of tall trees hang over the streets and sidewalks between houses, which are arranged into an easily walkable grid pattern.

Tastes of Latin America
Clarke Square is known for its numerous authentic Mexican restaurants, from the handmade Latin American breads at Mr. Churro to the tacos at the El Charrito food truck. Locals enjoy shopping at El Rey, a locally beloved Hispanic grocery store chain that opened its first location in Clarke Square in 1978. Inside, piñatas and other colorful décor dangle from the ceiling, and Taco Loco is an authentic in-house taqueria. For more groceries, residents can stop by Pete’s Fruit Market, known for its fresh produce. And just a few blocks from Mitchell Park, Oscar's Pub & Grill is a family-owned joint with 40 beers on tap and famous gourmet burgers.

Catch a bus to work
National Avenue offers direct access to Interstate 94, taking Clarke Square residents the 3 miles into downtown Milwaukee, usually a 10-minute trip. Bus lines run along National Ave and 16th Street, connecting riders to downtown and into the Menomonee Valley. The Valley has dozens of workplaces, including factories, garages and the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. And due to its location on the south side, Clarke Square has more direct access to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport and Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, the largest hospital in the state.
