The best of both worlds between Wauwatosa and Milwaukee
Not far from Milwaukee and its attractions, as well as the suburban atmosphere of Wauwatosa, Golden Valley offers the best of both worlds. Though the neighborhood is within the city limits of Milwaukee, it has all the best perks of Wauwatosa, like the parks, shopping and a community vibe, without having the same high cost of nearby homes. "There's neighborhood stability there, and it's a nice starter home area that's generally safer than areas closer to downtown," says Ben Mullikin, a Realtor with M3 Realty who has been selling in the area for over 20 years. Unlike traditional suburbs, like those in Wauwatosa, houses in Golden Valley are close together on narrow lots. The area is densely populated, with about 3,000 residents, but trim yards lined with tall trees bring suburban charm and coziness to one of Milwaukee's westernmost neighborhoods.

Hartung Park has a unique history
When it comes to getting outside and enjoying nature, Golden Valley deserves a gold medal. Hartung Park is at the southwestern end of the neighborhood. The hilly park with tall grass and gravel paths was originally a quarry in the early 1800s. "They actually pulled up some cool fossils there from when Wisconsin was still an ocean," Mullikin says. More than 600 million years ago, the state was under a shallow sea but rose above the water again with the slow-changing topography. The quarry has since been filled and is now home to a playground, pond and workout equipment. The park has a farmers' market each Wednesday from June to September. The Menomonee River flows west of Hartung Park and is surrounded by walking trails through dense trees, golf courses and many small neighborhood parks. "People even drive to the river and find a spot to park to enjoy it because it's such a destination," Mullikin says. "And it's all within walking distance of Golden Valley." Salmon from Lake Michigan spawn as far north in the river as Golden Valley, and residents can fish from along the riverbanks. Following the river, or trails that are part of the 135-mile-long Oak Leaf Trail, leads to Currie Park. The park has 18 holes of golf at a public course and is where residents can let their dogs get some energy out at Currie Dog Park. More than 11 acres of fenced-in grass provide plenty of room for playing fetch, and the space is separated for large and small dogs.

A cathartic experience at Smash Zone
Sentry Foods is in the neighborhood along Lisbon Avenue, but the area's most extensive shopping center is just west of the Menomonee River Parkway and Interstate 41. Meijer, T.J. Maxx, Whole Foods, Lowe's Home Improvement, Target, Petco and more are at the intersection of North 124th and West Burleigh streets, just 2 miles from Golden Valley. Closer to home are two Milwaukee-born companies with a mission. Since 1963, the Emery family has helped people achieve their goals of getting active through custom fittings for bicycles and triathlon equipment at Emerys Cycling, Triathlon & Fitness. The store is one of the Midwest's leaders in creative adaptive bikes for persons with disabilities and physical restrictions. Relieving stress is the name of the game at Smash Zone, where the concept is simple: patrons come in, put on protective gear, choose smashable items and destroy them with hammers, golf clubs or baseball bats. "We really took the opportunity to help others going through scary things," says owner Glenda Granados, who was inspired to start Smash Zone after losing her daughter, Victoria, to cancer. "Even on a daily basis, people have stress, and it's healthy to have an outlet and a safe place to get that out."
Smash Zone offers Golden Valley residents a unique, stress-relieving experience.

Relatively low prices help homes sell fast
The homes in Golden Valley are mainly ranch-styles, bungalows and Cape Cods with detached garages. Built during the middle of the 19th century, the homes range between $160,000 and $330,000. Size does not vary significantly from one home to the next, and most have three or four bedrooms. Prices depend on condition and recent upgrades rather than size, and multi-family homes are available in the same price range despite having two or more units. Homes are less expensive than the Milwaukee Metro average and well below the Wauwatosa average, contributing to homes selling after about two weeks on the market. "Golden Valley is what some call a 'Mustache Neighborhood' because there was a recent legislation that required law enforcement and firefighters to live within 15 miles of the city's boundaries," Mullikin says. "A lot of cops, firefighters and emergency personnel moved there." Most residents own their homes and keep their lawns neat with frequent mowing, potted plants and landscaping.

Walking to Ninety-Fifth Street School
Milwaukee Public Schools has open enrollment and school of choice. Students can attend any school in the district, but many parents choose nearby schools for their children because district-provided transportation is not guaranteed. Ninety-Fifth Street School is in the middle of the neighborhood, where many residents begin learning. It is within walking or biking distance of most. To get there, some students must cross West Lisbon Avenue, which has two lanes in each direction. But the speed limit is 35 m.p.h., and crosswalks and slower school-zone areas surround it. The school is rated a C-minus by Niche and recognized by the state as a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports school. Milwaukee School of Languages teaches sixth grade and higher and is rated a B-minus. Mount Mary University is a private four-year institution just south of the neighborhood. A few religiously affiliated schools are nearby, like Divine Savior Holy Angels High School and Milwaukee Lutheran High School.

One road to shopping, another road to Milwaukee’s downtown
Two major roads run alongside and through the neighborhood. Capitol Drive leads west to Wauwatosa and east to Lake Michigan, while Lisbon Avenue offers a straight shot to downtown Milwaukee. Interstate 41 operates just west of the neighborhood, making it easy to reach attractions in the greater region, like the Milwaukee County Zoo and connectivity to Interstate 94. Milwaukee County Transit System has over 40 bus routes, two of which run along the borders of Golden Valley. Froedtert Hospital is 4 miles south, and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport is 20 miles southeast.
