Known for its Serbian ancestry
The defining characteristic of Lyons Park is the towering St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, which stands in the northeastern corner of the neighborhood. Mark Borkowski is a Milwaukee City Council Member who represents District 11, which includes Lyons Park. "It's a beautiful, European church with the steeples and everything," Borkowski says. "It adds a lot of character to that neighborhood." But this century-plus-old church isn’t just a feast for the eyes (both inside and out); it’s one of several still-standing relics of the proud Serbian culture that thrived in this small Southwest Side neighborhood for much of the 20th century. Regardless of background, today’s roughly 1,500 Lyons Park residents love coming together to enjoy neighborly activities and the area’s titular green space, as well as immediate access to one of Milwaukee’s major roadways.

Kids in the neighborhood can easily walk to school at St. Sava, but several schools in the Milwaukee Public Schools district also operate within minutes of the neighborhood, welcoming all grade levels. Classic Serbian cuisine and events
Of course, nothing brings a community together like food — something the folks at the American Serb Hall know full well. Along with being a large and beautiful banquet hall, this business has hosted Friday Fish Fries since 1967, serving delicious fried, baked and Serbian-style seafood in a family-friendly setting. Elsewhere in the neighborhood is Brass Key Restaurant, a large diner-style restaurant specializing in American classics, Italian and Greek cuisines as well as surf and turf. Those wanting a drink can enjoy Brass Key’s stacked bar stuffed with sports memorabilia or head down the road to Friends on Forest Home, a classic hometown bar that’ll play just about any Milwaukee game.
