"One of Milwaukee's most ethnically diverse neighborhoods"
Once a bastion of Irish immigrants, Merrill Park has since become “one of Milwaukee’s most ethnically diverse neighborhoods,” per a local historic marker. “There is still a lot of diversity,” says Milwaukee District 10 Alderwoman Sharlen Moore, an eight-year resident who runs Merrill Park Neighbors, a community organization. “I think that’s the uniqueness with Merrill Park … as well as its location.” Indeed, just 3 miles west of downtown and adjacent to a major interstate, Merrill Park is ideal for commuters and those who like to watch the Brewers play. The neighborhood also features sizeable, classically designed homes at lower-than-expected prices and is home to an elite private boys’ high school.

Home to Wisconsin's third-best private high school
Many Merrill Park children attend private schools, including the neighborhood’s Marquette University High School. Niche awards this all-boys Jesuit college prep school an A-plus grade and considers it Wisconsin’s third-best Catholic high school. Moore says MUHS has been a boon for the neighborhood in several ways. “With Marquette being there, our streets are swept, and our snow is plowed,” she says. “The city supports the neighborhood by supporting the school.” Another neighborhood Catholic school, Messmer Saint Rose, offers coed learning for kindergarten through eighth grade; it does not have a Niche score. Public options nearby include Albert Story School, which has about 400 K-8 students and a C-minus from Niche. Milwaukee High School of the Arts, about ½ mile away, has a C-plus and enrolls nearly 1,000 teens via audition-based admissions.

"Literally five minutes from downtown"
Merrill Park’s location has numerous advantages besides proximity to an A-plus school. Interstate 94 runs alongside the neighborhood to the south, offering a direct route to downtown Milwaukee and other hotspots. “I’m literally five minutes from downtown, Miller Park Way or American Family Stadium,” Moore says. The neighborhood is also popular with people who work in the Menomonee Valley, which sits immediately south across the interstate. Milwaukee County Transit System buses serve commuters at several stops along major roads like 35th Street and Wisconsin Avenue.

Grand, classical homes at lower-than-expected prices
Chris Slinker, owner of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Metro Realty in Wauwatosa, calls the local architecture “gorgeous — some of the coolest houses you’ll ever see.” Grand Queen Anne, American Foursquare, Arts & Crafts and other designs grace the neighborhood’s gridded, sidewalk-lined blocks. Equally ornate duplexes and triplexes appear occasionally. Some mansions with nine or more bedrooms have been subdivided into apartments. However, even the most expansive properties rarely exceed $300,000. Merrill Park’s status as a lower-income neighborhood and its risk for crime are likely correlated to the local home values. (CAP Index gives it a crime score of 7 out of 10 and says it’s at especially high risk of homicide, robbery and assault.) Prices start below $40,000 for smaller, run-down houses needing extensive repairs. Prices peak in the low $400,000s, which might buy a restored, nearly 3,000-square-foot Victorian home.

Activity for all ages at Merrill Park
The neighborhood shares a name with the modest green space at its center, Merrill Park. This city-run park features baseball, soccer, basketball and tennis facilities, a playground and a wading pool. Immediately west, Quad Park hosts home MUHS sporting events, including football and soccer games and track meets. Smaller neighborhood green spaces include Valley Park, part of the Piggsville subdivision to the west. Visitors can play on the playground, stretch out on the lawn or relax on a bench under ample tree cover.

Locally beloved watering holes
Businesses are few and far between in Merrill Park. Among the standouts is TJ’s on 35th, a watering hole that’s a haven for any Packer fan. (It’s even painted green, white and yellow, making it impossible to miss.) In Piggsville, Valley Inn has been owned by the same family since 1959 and offers a similarly downhome-style atmosphere. It’s a popular post-game spot for Brewers fans coming from American Family Field, which is less than ½ mile from the neighborhood. Nearby restaurants include Daddy’s Soul Food & Grille, known for its catfish, baked chicken and black-eyed peas. Walgreens operates a location across the street from Merrill Park to the north. The nearest big-box store is Walmart Supercenter, about 1 mile south of the neighborhood.
