Midtown is diverse, welcoming and between the city and the suburbs

Midtown gets its name from its location near the geographic center of Milwaukee. Still, it may as well be named for being a middle ground for many walks of life today. The welcoming neighborhood is home to diverse residents, a mix of renters and owners and people seeking a central place to settle down between the city and the suburbs. Parks, schools, bus stops and businesses within walking distance, as well as relatively affordable home prices, only add to Midtown's draw.

Who lives in the neighborhood and who is buying homes there

After a century as an asylum for immigrants, refugees and displaced Milwaukeeans from the former Bronzeville, Midtown has become a vibrant and diverse community. Seven in 10 residents are African American, one in six are Asian, and many other locals are Latino, with Mexican and Puerto Rican ancestry. Living in the neighborhood, you'll also see a mix of long-term residents, first-time buyers and renters. "Because that area is super affordable, you're going to see a lot of investors and landlords who own the properties and rent them out to families who maybe can't afford to buy yet," says Randy Lee, a Realtor with Keller Williams Milwaukee North Shore. Speaking of families, Midtown is full of them – more than a third of residents are children.

Home prices and how they compare to nearby neighborhoods and cities

While looking for a home in Midtown, you'll find many single-family A-frame cottages, Cape Cods and bungalows, which range from below $100,000 to the low $200,000s. Duplexes, usually in Victorian-era cottages or Queen Annes, range from below $100,000 to the high $200,000s. While the area's median price in the mid-$100,000s is on par with nearby neighborhoods, like King Park, Triangle North and Walnut Hill, it's well below the Milwaukee Metro median and significantly lower than Wauwatosa's – a suburban city on the west side of Milwaukee. "Buying in Midtown puts you closer to Tosa [Wauwatosa], which is super desirable because of its good schools, parks and shopping," Lee says. "So, a lot of buyers end up in Midtown if they want to be near Tosa but can't afford those high prices."

Lead pipes are a concern in the area, as most homes were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The City of Milwaukee plans to replace all lead service lines by 2030.

Getting around and commuting to Milwaukee and Wauwatosa

Whether you're traveling to Wauwatosa, downtown Milwaukee or just up the street, it's easy to get around Midtown. Main commuting thoroughfares head out in every direction, and sidewalks, buses and bike lanes add micromobility:

  • West Walnut Street, Vliet Street and North Avenue run through the center of Midtown and are main connecting thoroughfares in central Milwaukee.
  • Designated bike lanes are along many of the neighborhood's bordering and intersecting roads, with those on Walnut Street connecting east across the Milwaukee River into the Lower East Side.
  • Milwaukee County Transit System bus routes, including the PurpleLine and the #57, stop in the neighborhood.
  • Ramps to both Interstate 43 and Interstate 94 are about a mile away.

Grocery stores and restaurants, a walk or bus ride away

It's possible to live in the neighborhood without a car, since daily necessities are within walking distance and along bus routes. Save A Lot and Fondy Farmers Market are just past North Avenue, while smaller markets and convenience stores are in the neighborhood. Midtown has few restaurants, but take a bus west on Nort Avenue or south to Avenues West, and you'll have an assortment of bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from.

Magnet school options are in the neighborhood

Milwaukee Public Schools' school choice program allows students to apply to any public, magnet or charter school in the district, and a few sought-after schools are in the neighborhood. Milwaukee High School of the Arts, Brown Street Academy, Starms Early Childhood Center and Starms Discovery Learning Center are all magnet options in Midtown. Kids can continue learning at The Kellogg PEAK Initiative, based out of Tiefenthaler Park. The non-profit organization has summer camps and year-round youth programs for first grade through graduation.

Where to enjoy the outdoors around Midtown

When kids get out of school, they head to the playground, splash pad and basketball courts at Tiefenthaler Park. Alice's Garden is a community garden in the neighborhood's northeastern corner that connects residents with educational opportunities, events and demonstrations on growing food and eating healthy.
