Silver Swan is an industry-heavy area with shops and old home
Opportunity abounds in Silver Swan, an industry-heavy Milwaukee neighborhood, where you can also find a diverse housing stock, walk the kids to school and even discover your latest bargain buy. Silver Swan comprises a large section of the Northwest Side, about 8 miles from the heart of the city. Nearly half of its real estate includes offices and warehouses lining the railroad between Appleton Avenue and Fond du Lac Freeway. However, it’s still home to over 3,200 people.
Apartments and single-family homes mix across the neighborhood
While many residents live in apartments, others occupy single-family dwellings, mainly modest ranch-style houses from the mid-to-late 20th century. Cape Cods and a handful of bungalows from the early 1900s also appear around the neighborhood. Home values average around $165,000, though a ranch-style home over 1,700 feet with a basement and an attached garage might reach the mid-$200,000s. On the lower end, a sub-1,000-square-foot Cape Cod needing updates could cost under $140,000.
Local schools have social events and high school career programs
Residents in the eastern half of Silver Swan are within easy walking distance of William Cullen Bryant School, part of Milwaukee Public Schools. Around 200 kindergarten through fifth grade students attend Bryant, whose STEAM-focused instruction has earned above-average evaluations from the state education department. Middle-grade students can attend Grantosa Drive School, which welcomes its kindergarten through eighth grade families to engage with the school community through such events as Muffins with Moms and Donuts with Dads. And less than a mile east of the neighborhood, James Madison Academic Campus offers ninth through 12th graders hands-on experience with various careers, from emergency medicine to finance.
Job opportunities and diverse cuisine options close to home
Goodwill Workforce Connection Center operates directly north across the train tracks, offering workforce readiness training for job-searching Milwaukeeans. To support these efforts, residents can visit the campus’s store, which realtor Woody Jarvis says hardly feels like your typical Goodwill. “It’s like a department store, and they treat their customers like it, too,” says Jarvis, owner of Jarvis Realty Inc. “Some folks can spend hours going aisle to aisle and looking at a lot of stuff — they’ve got a lot of variety. When I go in there, I’m always looking for old records.” If you like to cap off a shopping trip with a good meal, Silver Swan features several locally owned eateries. Los Tres Amigos offers classic Mexican fare from tacos to chimichangas, plus American favorites like cheeseburgers and Philly cheesesteaks. A few blocks east, Gianelli’s Pizza & Chicken Man has dished out everything from pepperoni-peppered pies to buckets of chicken since 1983.
Indoor fitness classes and playgrounds keep families active year-round
Residents visit Bryant Playfield to enjoy a pickup game on the baseball and softball diamonds while the kids take to the playground. About a block west of the neighborhood, you can find an entrance to the Oak Leaf Trail’s Menomonee Line, following the Little Menomonee and Menomonee rivers beneath generously shady trees. And if it’s too cold for outdoor activities, Bryant School hosts several adult- and kid-oriented community classes, from hip-hop cardio to basketball basics.
Grocery store options and freeway access are nearby
To restock your pantry and fridge, head about five minutes down Appleton to Hmong Town, an Asian grocery, or a few blocks farther to the Save A Lot supermarket. More extensive shopping spots nearby include Sam’s Club and Woodman’s Food Market, both less than 10 minutes in the opposite direction. And you can take either Interstate 41 or Fond du Lac Freeway to reach downtown Milwaukee in about 20 minutes.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
