A residential, commercial, industrial and aerial neighborhood
Timmerman West feels like a half-dozen Milwaukee neighborhoods blended into a single slice of the Northwest Side. A major highway and a peaceful, forest-enclosed river split this community into distinct residential, commercial and industrial sections. It’s also home to Timmerman Airport, a small site where private charter planes and pilots in training take to the skies.

Ramblers, duplexes, condos and more
Most Timmerman West homes occupy the neighborhood’s eastern section on loosely gridded, sidewalk-lined streets alongside the airport. Houses in this section mostly include ranch-style constructions from the mid-1900s. T the occasional Cape Cod, bungalow and split-level design also appear, along with two-story duplexes. Meanwhile, Newport West Condominiums features 120 two-bedroom units in a Tudor-inspired building with a community pool and underground parking. These 900- to 1,000-square-foot condos start at around $50,000, while detached homes over 2,500 square feet can reach the low $300,000s.

Intimate views of the Menomonee River
The neighborhood’s sidewalks eventually connect residents to the Oak Leaf Trail, a county-wide trail system stretching more than 130 miles. Within the neighborhood, the Oak Leaf Trail leads travelers to the Menomonee River Parkway. Here, walking paths and secluded coves offer intimate views of the softly flowing Menomonee River, complete with the company of various critters. “We have a lot of migratory birds like we do in southeast Wisconsin,” says Tyler Zwagerman with the Community Development department of the neighboring Menomonee Falls. “It’s a great place to enjoy the river and the sights and sounds of nature. You’ll see a lot of people from the community out.” Indoor recreation is available just west of the neighborhood at Butler Skateland, one of the area’s largest roller rinks.

From shawarma to shrimp
Silver Spring Drive and Interstate 41 intersect in the northwest section of Timmerman West, surrounded by a cluster of businesses and eateries both locally owned and internationally known. If locals don’t feel like hitting KFC, McDonald’s or other drive-thru staples, they can try Sinbad’s Grill. This Mediterranean eatery has made waves within the neighborhood thanks to its rich, flavorful meats. Visitors especially love the mixed grill with chicken, beef and kofta kebobs; the gyro, shawarma and falafel plates are also worth a try. For those preferring savory sea fare, Red Crab Juicy Seafood serves crab- and shrimp-infused dishes alongside onion rings, hushpuppies and other fried favorites.
