The roots of Triangle North
Triangle North was first settled in the 1870s by German immigrants, then welcomed a diverse mix of different people groups over the following decades, including Russians, Poles and African Americans. Several local movements and initiatives have involved the Triangle North community, from organized cleanups to resident empowerment and anti-displacement efforts. The community is bordered by Interstate 43 and sits adjacent to the Bronzeville area of Milwaukee, a historic spot for African American culture.

Unique, vintage homes
Most residents live in wood-framed houses and bungalows built at the turn of the 20th century. Two-story builds in the neighborhood commonly function as duplexes, featuring separate top- and bottom-floor units. While most have uncomplicated, wood-sided facades and monochrome paint jobs, some adopt more colorful, intricate Victorian or Craftsman design elements. Fixer-upper homes or empty lots start under $100,000, and $150,000 will get a move-in ready home with 1,000 sq. ft. Gridded streets are shaded by trees, and backyards often contain detached garages. Several new builds have popped up around the neighborhood over the last 20 years, with prices around $250,000.

Walk over major roads to neighboring parks
Sidewalk-lined bridges lead over the two major roads that separate Triangle North from nearby parks. The neighboring James W. Beckum Park and Carver Park have hosted the Beckum-Stapleton Little League for nearly 60 years. Youngsters can join whether they’re T-ball-aged or teenaged; if they’re not into baseball or softball, they can still shoot hoops, enjoy the playground, or cool off in the splash pad. To the west, Johnsons Park features over 13 acres of green space perfect for picnics when someone is performing on the outdoor stage. Attached to Johnsons Park is Alice’s Garden, a community garden where locals can enjoy the rewarding process of planting, caring for, and harvesting their own food. And when it’s too cold to spend time outside, the nearby Northside YMCA is popular for basketball classes.

All locally owned eateries reflect their owners’ pride in being from Triangle North, though none so strongly as 1700 Pull Up. Chef Rosetta Bond grew up in the neighborhood and opened this soul food eatery to give back to the community. Locals also love to dine out at Speed Queen Bar-B-Q, which claims to use the largest barbecue pit in the city. “People drive from all over to go,” says Chanell Royston, a local real estate agent with Sotheby’s International Realty. “It’s a staple that’s been around since the ‘50s or the ‘60s.” Another North Side staple, Tastee Twist, keeps customers coming back for its decked-out soft-serve ice cream. And to pick up groceries, locals can walk to Galst or head a mile away to Pete’s Fruit Market, known for its fresh produce.
