Triangle North
Neighborhood in Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Milwaukee County 53205
Unique, vintage homes
Most residents live in wood-framed houses and bungalows built at the turn of the 20th century. Two-story builds in the neighborhood commonly function as duplexes, featuring separate top- and bottom-floor units. While most have uncomplicated, wood-sided facades and monochrome paint jobs, some adopt more colorful, intricate Victorian or Craftsman design elements. Fixer-upper homes or empty lots start under $100,000, and $150,000 will get a move-in ready home with 1,000 sq. ft. Gridded streets are shaded by trees, and backyards often contain detached garages. Several new builds have popped up around the neighborhood over the last 20 years, with prices around $250,000.Walk over major roads to neighboring parks
Sidewalk-lined bridges lead over the two major roads that separate Triangle North from nearby parks. The neighboring James W. Beckum Park and Carver Park have hosted the Beckum-Stapleton Little League for nearly 60 years. Youngsters can join whether they’re T-ball-aged or teenaged; if they’re not into baseball or softball, they can still shoot hoops, enjoy the playground, or cool off in the splash pad. To the west, Johnsons Park features over 13 acres of green space perfect for picnics when someone is performing on the outdoor stage. Attached to Johnsons Park is Alice’s Garden, a community garden where locals can enjoy the rewarding process of planting, caring for, and harvesting their own food. And when it’s too cold to spend time outside, the nearby Northside YMCA is popular for basketball classes.Creative public schools
Several lauded schools operate within and just outside Triangle North, including Milwaukee College Prep School’s Lloyd Street campus at the heart of the neighborhood. Every Milwaukee student from kindergarten to eighth grade is eligible to attend this charter school, which prides itself on building critical thinking and life skills. Enrollment is determined via lottery. Niche rates the school a C-minus. Milwaukee Public Schools operates three schools just a block or two east of the neighborhood: Elm Creative Arts School, rated C-minus; Roosevelt Middle School of the Arts, rated D-plus; and The Alliance School of Milwaukee for high schoolers, rated C. All three are noted for integrating visual, auditory and performing arts into every area of study.Proximity to events in Bronzeville
Triangle North is a 20-minute walk away from the heart of the Bronzeville area of Milwaukee, which centers around Dr. M.L.K Jr. Drive, usually just called King Drive. Bronzeville has a rich history as an African American social and economic hub and today is known for its annual festivals and diverse local businesses. “There are some fantastic events there,” says Claire Koenig, the Senior Director of Communications with VISIT Milwaukee. “Bronzeville Week has everything from lectures to musical performances, and the Juneteenth celebration has a massive parade that just seems to get bigger each year.”Two miles north of downtown Milwaukee
For commuters who work in the city, downtown is just 2 miles away, and bus lines run along major streets in the neighborhood. Interstate 43 also sits directly east of Triangle North, making it easy for residents to travel to any part of greater Milwaukee, including the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. The bordering big roads make travel convenient, but they do bring some significant road noise to nearby homes.Comfort food from local businesses
All locally owned eateries reflect their owners’ pride in being from Triangle North, though none so strongly as 1700 Pull Up. Chef Rosetta Bond grew up in the neighborhood and opened this soul food eatery to give back to the community. Locals also love to dine out at Speed Queen Bar-B-Q, which claims to use the largest barbecue pit in the city. “People drive from all over to go,” says Chanell Royston, a local real estate agent with Sotheby’s International Realty. “It’s a staple that’s been around since the ‘50s or the ‘60s.” Another North Side staple, Tastee Twist, keeps customers coming back for its decked-out soft-serve ice cream. And to pick up groceries, locals can walk to Galst or head a mile away to Pete’s Fruit Market, known for its fresh produce.
