Peaceful yet near lots of amenities
With winding residential streets and a large, multipurpose park that ties it all together, Wilson Park is Milwaukee living at its most bucolic. Around 3,000 people live in this South Side suburb, drawn to its many recreational options, proximity to schools and major highways, as well as its variety of home styles. “It has the traditional, old-fashioned, working-class, South Side of Milwaukee culture, which still exists, which is wonderful,” says Jeff Majdoch, co-owner of local business Big Putts Mini Golf. “It’s a lot of good, hardworking people that like to put in an honest day’s work but also like to have an honest night of fun.”
Homes developed post WWII
Much of Wilson Park’s housing stock was developed in the wake of World War II when returning soldiers began settling in the Milwaukee suburbs. That’s why there are plenty of small, aluminum-sided cottages from that era lining the neighborhood’s residential streets. The southern part of the neighborhood features the widest variety of architectural styles, including Cape Cod, Colonial revival and bungalows. Ranch-style houses also run throughout the neighborhood, mixing and matching materials, colors and floor plans. Tudor cottages are also common in the eastern part of the neighborhood, many with dark, elegant brick facades and curved roofs. Home prices range from $171,000 to $445,000. Many homes have detached garages, and lots are typically less than 1/8 acre, suitable for a small garden or gathering area. Wide tree-lined streets have sidewalks that connect virtually every residence in the community.
Elementary school uses IB programming
Students can walk to Lowell International Elementary School, an International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme World School, a framework for whole child development starting at age 3. It has a C-minus grade. Morse Middle School for the Gifted and Talented focuses on STEM and college preparation and has a C-minus grade from Niche. Milwaukee High School of the Arts offers advanced placement classes in several areas and has a C-plus grade.
Indoor and outdoor recreation
The 76-acre Wilson Park green space, established in the 1930s, features a fishing pond, a network of walking paths and a baseball diamond. Across the road is Wilson Recreation Center, offering several athletic facilities including three softball diamonds, tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, an outdoor pool and the Wilson Ice Arena. Another local favorite is Big Putts, a locally owned business, home to 18 unique putting greens and various vehicular memorabilia. “We love wheels, anything to do with wheels,” Majdoch says. “Motorcycling, cars, scooters, you name it — if it rolls, we’ll probably play with it.” (Keep an eye out for the Jeep from “Jurassic Park.”)
International cuisine
For groceries, residents can go to Monterey Market. Several dining options in and around Wilson Park include Sabor Divino, which offers authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, and Mario’s Italian Grill, which serves everything from appetizers to pizza to burgers. JB’s on 41 is a classic bowling alley and arcade with an extensive food and drink menu.
Only 7 miles to downtown
Residents can drive 7 miles to downtown Milwaukee via interstates 43 and 94. Milwaukee County Transit System bus stops are also available. General Mitchell International Airport is only a 4-mile drive via Wisconsin Highway 119.
