Pocket-sized neighborhood
Part of the greater Northeast community, Beltrami is a compact little neighborhood that stretches 10 blocks from west to east, small enough to explore from end to end in a single afternoon. "This is a beautiful old neighborhood with many 100-year-old homes," says Realtor Pat Paulson with EXIT Realty Metro. "This is a character neighborhood." The community was named after the Italian explorer Giacomo Costantino Beltrami – famed for his account of his travels through present-day Minnesota – who notably claimed to have found the source of the Mississippi River but also notably did not.
The Beltrami neighborhood is bordered by major travel arteries on three sids, including I-35W.

100-year-old homes
One of the older neighborhoods in the city, much of the housing inventory in Beltrami was built before 1939, some in the late 1800s. “You’re going to see a lot of older homes, obviously, but you’re also going to see a few not-so-old homes,” says Realtor Pat Paulson with EXIT Realty Metro. “Some stuff has become obsolete and has been renovated or replaced.” The area is predominately single-family, but there are also many multi-unit dwellings, as is common in this area of the city. The multi-units sold between July 2022 and July 2023 drove the median price up to $350,000 for the year. An eclectic variety of homes line the streets in Beltrami, with a heavy emphasis on turn-of-the 20th-century bungalows. The neighborhood is popular with investors because of its proximity to the university and the number of renters – about 51% is renter-occupied.

Business districts nearby
Not known for its hustle and bustle, Beltrami has a few dining destinations, but shopping for groceries and essentials is done outside its borders. There is an upscale Lunds & Byerlys grocer a six-block walk or drive down E. Hennepin Avenue in neighboring Marcy-Holmes. Spyhouse Coffee on Broadway Street NE is a buzzy cafe serving house-roasted coffee and baked goods. But it’s not just serving up caffeine, it’s crafting an atmosphere with a rustic yet industrial interior. Natural dark hardwood lines the floors, the walls and the ceilings, which are accented with exposed beams and ducts, and exposed brick lines the bar and exterior walls. An institution since 1960, Eli’s is a casual outpost of the downtown original offering up classic cocktails, brunch and New American fare. Eli’s East makes a mean margarita and pistachio cheesecake. HeadFlyer Brewing on E. Hennepin Avenue occupies an old textile building.

Playgrounds and bocce ball
Beltrami Park is the beating heart of this little locale, promising plenty of fun for the family and shady spots in the summer sun. The wading pool is particularly popular and is open from 10 am to 7 pm, seven days a week between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Kids of all ages love the robust playground, but little ones might prefer the train-themed play area. In a nod to the neighborhood’s Italian roots, six well-utilized bocce ball courts are popular with private players and local leagues. A canopy of mature oak trees shades the walking paths, and there are benches to sit on and relax. In nearby St. Anthony West is Boom Island Park, a 22-acre riverside park that offers a picturesque backdrop for a summer picnic and other outdoor recreation, with stunning views of the Minneapolis skyline in the distance.
