Renting condos or buying Tudor-inspired homes
Most Cedar-Riverside residents live in condos and apartments, but some can find the occasional single-family home close to downtown without paying downtown prices. The Tudor-inspired and national single-family homes often feature four bedrooms and can sell for $250,000 to $350,000. Drivers park their cars in the street, and skinny sidewalks run in front of the homes. Tall condo buildings stand to the west of Augsburg University with views of downtown and a rent rate starting around $1,300. Those looking to buy a condo can expect to pay $150,000 to $200,000.Residents connect with nature at Currie Park
Although green space is limited with the university and homes taking up most of the neighborhood, Currie Parks gives residents of all ages a place to get some fresh air. “Currie Park has a new playground, and they just put in a huge splash pad,” Vann says of the park’s amenities, including an old baseball field that was repurposed into a soccer field, which he says is more in line with the residents’ interests. Just outside the neighborhood to the west of the University of Minnesota campus is Riverside Park, with the adjacent Riverside Soccer Park. In addition to various sports fields and courts, the park includes a tot lot, an area to grill and picnic, walking paths and a wading pool to stay cool during the summer. “If you’re one of those people who like to be near urban areas, this is one of the areas that is more appealing because there’s a lot of local stuff going on – this is one of the spots in Minneapolis where you go to be immersed in a different culture,” Vann says.Learning at Lincoln International High School before college
Although the universities bring residents to the area, those with young children have options. Kids start at the B-rated Pratt Elementary School before transitioning to Northeast Middle School, which receives a C-plus from Niche. Students later graduate from the C-rated Lincoln International High School. The University of Minnesota tends to be the natural next step for students in the area, but they may also attend Augsburg University, a private Christian academy.Live concerts and Somali Independence Day Festival
Residents of all ages join the Somali Independence Day Festival celebrations every July. Visitors enjoy live music, traditional Somali dishes and games. People from all over Minnesota come down to join the fun. Cedar-Riverside also sits next to U.S. Bank Stadium and multiple theatres. University students and locals visit the area to see their favorite artists perform live. “You’ll also want to check out the Mixed Blood Theater, which does a lot of cool performances – they do traditional plays with untraditional people playing the roles,” Vann says of a highlight of the neighborhood’s theater district.Taking the bus or catching the light rail
Staussacher says traffic gets heavy in the morning and evening when classes and work start, but it stays moving so drivers won’t feel stuck in place. Buses run in the area to take residents who don’t have access to a car across the river to the UM. Others catch the light rail at Cedar-Riverside Station to visit downtown or south to the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.Relaxing after lass at Town Hall Brewery
Locals meet up with friends at Palmer’s, a century-old Minneapolis black-owned institution. Esquire named Palmer’s Bar one of the Best Bars in America in 2014 thanks to its quintessential dive feel. Ellie Staussacher, a Community Outreach Assistant at GrandMarc Seven Corners, says, “Town Hall Brewery has an old feel inside, but they have great food and drinks. Another popular spot is the Corner Bar, especially during game days.” Hungry locals also stop by Hard Times Cafe or The Read Sea Ethiopian Restaurant for tasty dishes.International grocery stores, including the Wadajir Grocery and Halal Meat market, sit along Cedar Avenue. For more options, residents might visit the Aldi on East Franklin Avenue or Trader Joe’s on Washington Avenue.
