A lakeside neighborhood with various amenities

Just under 4 miles from Minneapolis sits the neighborhood of East Bde Maka Ska, which borders its namesake lake, Bde Maka Ska. The lake and town were previously known as East Calhoun, but their names were changed in 2021 to honor the history of the Dakota people in this area. One thing that has remained constant is the lake being arguably the area's biggest draw. But its not the whole story, nor the only significant amenity. "We have the lake, we have so many restaurants and shops, and the area itself is just so beautiful and diverse," says Realtor Heather Leiviska of Coldwell Banker Realty. "That and the bike trails! It's such a fun neighborhood." Prices for homes here range from $450,000 to $2.5 million.

From Cape Cods to Craftsman-style homes

Most homes were built between the 1900s-1940s, resulting in a variety of architecture. "We've got colonials, Cape Cods, Victorians and Craftsman," Leiviska says. "It's a mixture of all sorts of styles, which makes it fun to walk around." There are also lakefront properties, but not in the traditional sense, since a walking path surrounds the shoreline. "There are homes with lake views, and they are highly sought after, but list longer because they are higher priced," Leviska says. Prices range from $450,000 to $ 2.5 million; the median sale price is $520,000.

Kayaking at Bde Maka Ska

Bde Maka Ska Park is the central, defining feature of the neighborhood and offers amenities such as a bike path, boat dock, fishing pier and sports fields. "That's, for sure, one of the reasons you would want to move here," Leiviska says. "The lake is 3 miles around, so you can hike or bike around, or you could canoe or paddleboard." Because the community is situated right next to the lake, it is always within walking distance. The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. in developed areas and 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. in underdeveloped regions. Rentals are available for canoes, kayaks, bikes, boats and paddles. During the summer, residents can bask in the sun on the beach.

Shopping and dining at Uptown

There are plenty of shopping and dining options in and around the neighborhood. According to Leviska, Uptown, located north of the neighborhood, is where residents get their groceries: "There's a Cub in Uptown, a Lunds & Byerlys in Uptown; basically, you go to Uptown for groceries and any essentials." There are also several local restaurants located along Hennepin Avenue. Kim's serves Korean American food with fun cocktails. Leiviska personally recommends Barbette, a French bistro. "We walk over there for wine and oysters," she says. For pastries, residents can head to the Black Walnut Bakery, which serves salads and soups alongside its baked goods.
