Fulton has highly rated schools and lots of shopping near Lake Harriet

Fulton is a small neighborhood nestled between the shores of Lake Harriet and one of Edina ’s busiest shopping districts. However, because it is part of South Minneapolis, residents generally pay less for a house here than they would in Edina. Highly rated schools, local restaurants and regular events at 50th & France help create a family-friendly atmosphere, and it’s clear to see why people stay here for years.

Homes cost more than most of South Minneapolis but less than Edina

Many Fulton homes were built between the 1910s and the 1930s, including Tudor Revivals and Craftsman-style homes. There are also some mid-20th-century ranch-style houses and Cape Cods. Newer construction, while still rare, is more common here than in Lynnhurst, but the homes often take inspiration from older architecture. “You’ve got people that are building very modern, with flat fronts and angular lines,” says Realtor Andrea Vorachek with Reside, who has lived in Minneapolis since 2008. “But I’d say that the majority of people are trying to keep it looking like that era, which the neighbors appreciate. It has a cohesive feel.”

Vorachek says there isn’t much turnover in the neighborhood. “Most people, when they are moving to these areas, are moving to raise their kids or live there for a while,” she says. Most homes cost between the mid-$300,000s and the high $900,000s, but larger homes, especially those near Lake Harriet, can range from $1 million to $3.2 million. While the median single-family price is significantly higher than in most of South Minneapolis, it is slightly lower than in Lynnhurst and Linden Hills and much lower than in Edina. “I like to joke that it’s like Edina without the Edina price tag,” Vorachek says.

50th & France has plenty of shops and events

50th & France is a hub of activity. “There’s a ton of shopping, with retail and grocery stores,” Vorachek says. “Anything you could want is incredibly walkable.” While there, you can:

  • Try on clothes at popular retailers like Anthropologie
  • Support local businesses like Harriet and Alice
  • Get groceries from Lunds and Byerlys
  • Watch a movie at the Edina Mann Theatre
There are also several events throughout the year, from a holiday tree lighting to a petting zoo in the plaza every October. One of the most popular celebrations is the Edina Art Fair, the longest-running art fair in Minnesota. You can listen to live music while exploring the paintings, sculptures and more, or head to the kids’ zone for crafts and games.

Dining options include high-end restaurants and community staples

Mixed in with all the stores is a plethora of restaurants, ranging from casual cafes to more sophisticated dinner spots. Options include:

  • Dexter’s, an elevated take on the classic sports bar with a popular martini flight
  • Raag, an Indian restaurant that turns into a cafe in the morning and a bar at night
  • Coalition, a high-end restaurant that serves American dishes with global influences
  • Edina Creamery, a local ice cream parlor with an ever-changing selection of flavors
  • Red Cow, a Minneapolis staple known for its gourmet burgers
Vorachek says that Red Cow is as much a “fan favorite” for its great food as for its friendly atmosphere. “Literally every family in Edina or South Minneapolis takes their kids there at one point or another during the month,” she says. “It’s super kid-friendly, which, when you’ve got an unruly toddler, is really great. There’s like 10 other tables with the same thing happening.”

Lake Harriet and Pershing Field Park offer outdoor fun

People ride their bikes to Lake Harriet all the time to go boating, fishing and swimming. During the winter, it becomes a popular spot for skiing and ice skating. There are also miles of walking trails that connect residents to beaches and the larger Chain of Lakes park system. Pershing Field Park is also in the neighborhood, with amenities like athletic fields, a playground and a wading pool that’s open during the summer. At the Pershing Recreation Center, you can enroll your kids in an after-school program or rent out a meeting room.

When not driving, most people walk or ride their bike

“A lot of people like Fulton because the proximity is so much,” Vorachek says. “You can hop onto Highway 62 fairly easily off of France Avenue.” Interstate 35 West is also nearby, and you can reach downtown Minneapolis in less than 10 miles, or under 20 minutes. It’s a 15-mile, or 30-minute, drive to downtown Saint Paul. When not driving, Vorachek says that there’s “quite a bit of walking and biking.” Metro Transit buses run along France Avenue, 50th Street and Xerxes Avenue.
